TWO DAYS LATER, NICK made his rounds. The nurses still batted their eyes at him, but the novelty of it had worn off.

He checked in on his patients and returned to the hallway, walking gingerly to offset the cramps in his thighs and legs.

“Are you okay?” a voice interrupted his waddling.

Nick stopped and spotted Caitlyn. Her dark hair was spread in a bun and she wore the pure white uniform of the nurses.

“I’m fine,” he said.

Caitlyn stepped forward and sniffed him.

“What are you doing?”

“Have you been drinking?”

“No.”

“You’re walking funny.”

He winced, recalling Melissa’s exercise routine from hell. He’d been wishing for death half-an-hour into her hour-and-a-half set.

Nick had gulped the stupid fruit shake as if it were his favorite soda. Melissa hadn’t even stopped for water.

“It’s nothing,” he said.

Nick tried to straighten his gait as they walked down the hall.

“So, I was waiting for you to call me.”

“Huh?”

He stopped mid-step and stared down at her. Why had she expected him to call? They’d gone out as friends.

Hadn’t they?

“I guess, you’re waiting the requisite seven days to call, but that’s kind of unnecessary since we work together.”

“Right.”

“So, when are we going out again?”

“Actually, Caitlyn, I don’t—”

His phone buzzed. Nick fished it out of his pocket. He read the message and glanced up.

“We’ll finish this conversation later.” Caitlyn shooed him away.

Nick’s mind was already moving on from the nurse to the procedures he would need to combat the emergency.

Caitlyn watched him go, sighing as he disappeared from sight. Nick Lee was a good man, and she’d met a short supply of those.

All she wanted was a chance.

Just one.

She licked her lips and walked back to her station.
