Chapter Seven

Derrick frowned as he listened to his mate pacing around in the bedroom upstairs. This was the bar’s third night open and as usual, they closed at three o’clock, but instead of staying to clean with the rest of the Pack, he’d left Brock in charge and hauled Lucy on home.

Home. It could be a real one at long last. If she’d just let him claim her. He’d only been around her for a few days, but it was driving his Wolf insane that she refused to acknowledge that they were fated to be together.

Could he be wrong? Maybe she did not feel it the way he did? No. That just couldn’t be true. His Dire Wolf snarled with impatience, but at the same time he was completely sure that Lucy Corwyn was his one and only.

She’d insisted on keeping her car at that damn human mechanic instead of letting him bring it here. Insisted on ignoring him until he thought he would lose his damn mind.

The scent of her coming heat grew each minute they spent together. The mating fever threatened to take him. Things were so intense the rest of the Pack had taken to going out for long rides on their bikes without him after their shifts were over knowing full well he wasn’t leaving her there alone.

This whole fucking thing was causing him no end of anxiety. Trying to control his emotions was like trying to keep a tidal wave from hitting the shore. He only hoped she’d change her mind about their mating before he lost it. Otherwise there was no way he’d be able to stop his Wolf from taking what was his, and that was not how he wanted to claim her.

Call him old-fashioned but he wanted her to come to him, ready and willing. Not forced by some side effect of their super-nature that she could not even begin to manage.

He listened to her moving about above him and his Wolf snarled and chomped inside his mind’s eye. The huge, prehistoric Wolf’s instinct was to be everything his mate needed. And that meant claiming her before her heat began.

If he denied her during her heat, she would suffer immeasurable pain and there was no way he could do that. Already his feelings echoed with love and complete devotion. Crazy or not, it was just the way he was built. And every inch of him, heart included, was built for Lucy.

His hands clenched tightly at his sides Derrick was aware of her every move as she paced the floor above him. He never expected to be this caught up in her, but it was out of his realm of control. Not something an Alpha could admit easily.

A knock at his door broke his concentration and he opened it to find his cousin staring at the floor.

“I came to apologize, for the uniform and things, you know,” Sheila said and he could tell from her scent she meant it, “I didn’t mean nothing by it, Derrick, just thought maybe you needed a little prodding.
