The next morning found her back in the nursery. While the babies were whirlwinds of activity, demanding her constant attention, she couldn't stop thinking about the drama that would be playing out later in the cycle, when the first sun set and a man's life was taken from him. She wondered if Clavon was with his family now, if he was holding his young sons tightly one last time, and telling his mate he loved her. Jenna didn't even know if Leors expressed such emotions, but she knew there was genuine affection between mated Leors, having witnessed it on several occasions. How hard it would be to leave children and a mate, to face death, in the prime of life! A great sadness weighed on her heart.

Resolutely, she forced herself to pay attention to her duties, trying to keep her focus on the infants, who represented the future and life, not death. Yet the morning dragged by with an aura of despair. Nothing could negate the reality of what was about to happen.

At one point, she stepped outside and saw the red sun had begun its descent over the horizon. Then she saw groups of Leors jogging toward the distant tribunal, which was the circular structure she'd seen in her vision yesterday. Kerem had explained that the tribunal was where all judgments were passed down, and all punishments meted out, in a public forum. Jenna wondered if such an event was considered sport or entertainment, and prayed that wasn't the case. Sickened, she returned to the nursery.

About an hour later, she saw Leors returning en masse from the tribunal. It was over. Clavon was dead.

And she felt as if a part of her had also died.
