Sixteen
Miles sits next to me in the back seat of the SUV. They placed a bag over my head the moment we started moving. I clasped my hands in my lap, slicked with sweatâor blood. Frankly, I donât know. I need to plan a back story. What if they stick me in a room with torture devices lining a table, demanding I tell them what Iâm doing in Italy?
Vacation. That was the original story. I can stick with that, right? But what if they search for my passport? One doesnât exist for Kennedy Jameson. My leg starts to bounce and Trotterâs voice pops in my head, âYouâre making my teeth chatterâ. I immediately stop shaking and take a deep breath. Itâll be fine. It has to be. Iâll find dad and weâll find a way out. Maybe we can hide out at the cabin until we can come up with a plan. Nobody would find us there.
âTime to go to sleep, princess.â Chris says. A hand grabs my arm and I jerk away.
âWhat are you doing?â I screech and try to grab for the fabric covering my face.
âItâs okay. Jesus, Chris, youâre freaking her out.â Miles grabs my hands and holds them down.
âYou fucking do it then.â
Are they going to drug me?! My adrenaline masks the pain of the road rash. I thrash for my life against Miles and Chris. I end up sideways in the seat and kick out, my foot connecting with something. Chris howls out in pain, but I donât stop.
âPigeon?! Fuck, whatâs going on?â Trotter screams inside my head.
âLet me go!â
âCalm down, before you make us hurt you,â Miles growls.
âI canât fucking see anything!â Trotter shouts. Crest comes into his view.
âEverest, tell us where you are. Weâll come get you.â Crest tries to use a calming voice.
Theyâre all talking at once. I have to get out of this. What if they never planned to take me to dad, and I was stupid enough to fall for their lies?
âWould you hold her fucking still?â Chris sounds like heâs talking with a pinched nose. Good, maybe I broke the fuckerâs face.
âIâm trying.â Miles strains against my arms.
They rip the bag off my head with clumps of my hair and smash a cloth against my nose and mouth.
âNo!â I try to push break free, but itâs pointless.
âPigeon!â Trotterâs voice turns frantic, then his voice fades and my limbs get heavy.
âThere, princess. Just relax and when you wake up, weâll be there.â Miles sweeps a hand down my arm. Iâm too tired to fight. They removed the fabric from over my eyes and I blink at the overheard car lights. They dim with my exhale, and thenânothing.
