Sixteen

Miles sits next to me in the back seat of the SUV. They placed a bag over my head the moment we started moving. I clasped my hands in my lap, slicked with sweat—or blood. Frankly, I don’t know. I need to plan a back story. What if they stick me in a room with torture devices lining a table, demanding I tell them what I’m doing in Italy?

Vacation. That was the original story. I can stick with that, right? But what if they search for my passport? One doesn’t exist for Kennedy Jameson. My leg starts to bounce and Trotter’s voice pops in my head, ‘You’re making my teeth chatter’. I immediately stop shaking and take a deep breath. It’ll be fine. It has to be. I’ll find dad and we’ll find a way out. Maybe we can hide out at the cabin until we can come up with a plan. Nobody would find us there.

“Time to go to sleep, princess.” Chris says. A hand grabs my arm and I jerk away.

“What are you doing?” I screech and try to grab for the fabric covering my face.

“It’s okay. Jesus, Chris, you’re freaking her out.” Miles grabs my hands and holds them down.

“You fucking do it then.”

Are they going to drug me?! My adrenaline masks the pain of the road rash. I thrash for my life against Miles and Chris. I end up sideways in the seat and kick out, my foot connecting with something. Chris howls out in pain, but I don’t stop.

“Pigeon?! Fuck, what’s going on?” Trotter screams inside my head.

“Let me go!”

“Calm down, before you make us hurt you,” Miles growls.

“I can’t fucking see anything!” Trotter shouts. Crest comes into his view.

“Everest, tell us where you are. We’ll come get you.” Crest tries to use a calming voice.

They’re all talking at once. I have to get out of this. What if they never planned to take me to dad, and I was stupid enough to fall for their lies?

“Would you hold her fucking still?” Chris sounds like he’s talking with a pinched nose. Good, maybe I broke the fucker’s face.

“I’m trying.” Miles strains against my arms.

They rip the bag off my head with clumps of my hair and smash a cloth against my nose and mouth.

“No!” I try to push break free, but it’s pointless.

“Pigeon!” Trotter’s voice turns frantic, then his voice fades and my limbs get heavy.

“There, princess. Just relax and when you wake up, we’ll be there.” Miles sweeps a hand down my arm. I’m too tired to fight. They removed the fabric from over my eyes and I blink at the overheard car lights. They dim with my exhale, and then—nothing.
