Chapter Twelve

The solitude Ruby once sought so eagerly wore down her reserves. She could no longer remain silent. Even though she vowed she would not seek Crispin out, once the sun set and her maids took their leave, she slipped from her chamber into the dark hallway.

Her heart pounded in her chest. She pulled her robe tighter around her shoulders. When she reached his door, she knocked. The sound echoed through the corridor, making her wince.

Silence met her from behind the door. She lifted her fist to knock again when the bulky door opened a crack.

Handsome blue eyes met hers. Crispin. No matter how much he angered her, she could not stop her affection for him from claiming a piece of her heart. She longed to throw herself into his embrace and let the warmth sink into her weary soul.

Without a word, he opened the door and stepped aside, sweeping his arm wide in invitation. She crossed the threshold and entered his domain. A small voice in the back of her mind shouted in warning, but her conscience warred against it.

“I was under the impression you had no desire for my company.” Crispin locked the door. “To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?”

She heard the derision in his voice but elected to ignore it. His emphasis on the final word sent a shiver down her spine. “I must speak with you about an urgent matter.”

“An urgent matter.” Crispin poured wine into two goblets. He held one out to her in offering, which she took and cradled between her hands. “What urgent matter brings you to my chamber at this late hour?”

Ruby fidgeted with the goblet unable to meet his gaze. Her heart demanded she speak her mind and reveal the wonderful news to Crispin. But try as she might to suppress it, worry consumed her thoughts. She pinched her eyes closed and inhaled deep. His scent surrounded her.

“Come, my sweeting.”

She opened her eyes to find him seated in an oversized chair beside the flames. He lay his hand on his thigh. The fabric of his tunic parted at his throat revealing his muscular chest. She longed to curl in his lap and lay her head against his beating heart.

“I promise to listen.” His grin revealed a row of white teeth. A fox inviting a hare into his den. “Come sit with me.”

The unease subsided as she studied his face. He lounged in the chair, arms open, his brow arched. Dark hair lay curled across his collar, contrasting with his pale skin. So regal and handsome and yet beneath that charming veneer lay unfathomable danger. The devil personified. Oh, how easy it would be to surrender to him, but at what cost?

He cocked his head. “Do you still bear me ill will?”

“I disagree with your methods.” Ruby stood firm. “But I bear you no ill will.”

“Yet you withdraw from my touch?” He draped his hand over the arm of the chair. “You fear me.”

“’Tis your unbridled temper and relentless desire for control I fear, not you.
