Chapter 15

Aris

After what feels like forever, we reach the end of the tunnels. We climb a spiraling staircase that opens into a cave. It isn’t very large, but when we step out into the sunlight, I realize that the entrance is well hidden by heavy shrubbery in the midst of a forest.

I notice no evidence of any cities or settlements nearby and I’m glad. Hopefully, we are the only ones out here.

Talwyn gives us a coin pouch. From the heavy weight of it, I suspect she has given us a hefty sum.

“In case you need lodgings or food,” she explains.

I thank her. From what she showed us on the map, it seems we will have to go through at least two towns before reaching the Heart of Andara. I’d forgotten how vast this area of the kingdom was until she laid it out before us.

Kyra takes her hand. “Thank you, Talwyn.”

Talwyn bows low. “You are welcome, my Queen.” She lifts her gaze to us both. “Your companions will find you soon. I sense it.”

Hope fills me with her words. I miss Fin, Cael and Lynx. I even miss Astra, and I’ve only just met her. I don’t know why they haven’t found us yet, but to hear they will find us soon is welcome news indeed.

Talwyn disappears back down the tunnel, leaving Kyra and me alone.

I turn my gaze toward the sky. The weather is clear and I want to put as much distance between us and whatever sinister forces have been trailing us since we arrived. “I will fly us as far as we can go before nightfall.”

“Do you still sense someone following us?”

“Yes, their presence is much fainter, but it is still there. I wish to get as far away from it as possible.”

I wish I were like Cael in this moment. He is able to wield fire, but I am only able to read minds through touch telepathy and sense danger. As much as I hate to admit it, he is the better choice to be bonded to her. He can protect her better than I can.

Shifting forms, I gather her in my arms and take to the sky. Spiraling up toward the clouds, I fly close between them, hoping to shield us from unwanted eyes.

The attachment muscles of my wings ache from disuse, probably because this is the first time I’ve ever used them in this life. When I was Bryndon, I shifted between five different forms, each with different abilities— a fox, peacock, spider, snake, and a dragon.

Kyra said that Cael can shift into a fox. I have not tried to shift into anything besides a peacock and I wonder if I can. I will have to try this when we land for the evening.

“Do you remember the first time we flew together?” Kyra asks, pulling me back from my thoughts.

The memory of taking her in my arms and flying her away from the castle fills my mind. Her mother was furious at us for having bonded in secret.
