CHAPTER ELEVEN

LATER THAT NIGHT, after saying goodbye to his brother, Felipe tapped on Emilia’s front door. He took another glance at his phone and the text he’d received in response to his, which had enquired if she’d made it home safely and how she was feeling.

I’m okay. Eva is staying the night at her friend’s place. Come over and keep me company if it’s not too late.

After witnessing her demoralising date tonight, wild horses couldn’t have kept him away. She didn’t need him to look out for her, but he hated the idea that she might be feeling vulnerable and alone. Seeing her out with another guy tonight, all dressed up and hopeful only to be so badly let down, had sent his protective urges into overdrive.

They weren’t an item, but he hadn’t expected to feel so...jealous, so possessive and invested in her happiness. He’d even abandoned his beer and switched to soft drinks after Emilia had left the bar, just so he could drive to her place and check up on her.

The door swung open and she stood on the threshold. His heart thumped excitedly. She’d changed out of her dress into jeans and a sweater. She looked relaxed and welcoming and unbearably beautiful.

‘Hey, how are you feeling?’ he asked, leaning in to brush her cheek with a kiss.

‘I’m good. Come in.’ Her smile for him was just the ego boost he needed. It lit her eyes as if, right then, he was the only person she wanted to see.

But he was fantasising, and he couldn’t afford to overthink his possessive feelings. They were understandable, as he’d said to Thiago, considering how well they got on and after everything Emilia had been through—losing her husband, raising their daughter alone and moving countries. And of course the amazing sex had complicated things, distorting his perspective.

Felipe followed her into a modern living room filled with comfy sofas, contemporary furniture, lamps and potted houseplants. A dog, he assumed Luna, greeted him with a thumping tail before sloping back off to her faux-fur dog bed.

‘Coffee or wine?’ Emilia asked, the wide neck of her sweater slipping to reveal one tanned and freckled shoulder and the lacy strap of her bra.

‘Better make it coffee. I drove here.’ Felipe released an internal groan of frustration. He was so drawn to her brand of effortless sophistication and unassuming sex appeal. Only he’d come to support her, not to seduce her. But resisting her now that they’d been intimate and knew each other so much better would not be an easy task, especially if she kept looking at him in that way.

‘Thanks for coming over,’ she said as she prepared his coffee. ‘I think I was still a little in shock when you texted. When I got home to find Eva’s message and an empty house, I almost burst into tears. Thank goodness for Luna.’ She glanced gratefully at the dog, who thumped her tail in response.

‘I’m sorry you had such a bad experience tonight,’ he said, removing his jacket and taking the cup of coffee from her.
