The scene was a mess.

A car was half in the café and half on the footpath with broken pieces of the outdoor tables and chairs scattered around. Police officers were trying to direct traffic and clear space and spectators, which was not an easy task because of the busy junction nearby.

Jonno was first on scene for medical assistance and left the beacons on his vehicle flashing as he got out, looking for whoever had already taken charge of the scene. He could see a fire engine approaching from one side and an ambulance was arriving from the same direction he’d come from. A police officer standing at the rear of the crashed car waved him over.

‘Was anybody sitting outside?’ Jonno asked.

‘Fortunately not,’ the police officer responded. ‘And there’s only a couple of people with minor injuries inside. They had time to jump out of the way, apparently. The driver of the car is elderly. Seems like they were intending to park but hit the accelerator instead of the brake. Unless there’s something medical going on. He’s refusing to get out of his car. There’s a doctor in there talking to him.’

‘Okay... I’ll take a quick look but it sounds as if I’m not really needed here.’

A glance over his shoulder showed Jonno that the ambulance had found a space to park and it sounded as if their crew would be easily able to handle whatever was happening inside the café. When he saw it was Brie getting out of the driver’s seat in the ambulance, however, Jonno found himself dismissing his plan of making himself instantly available for another call. When his gaze caught hers, even across a gap as big as this, in the middle of a chaotic accident scene, he was aware of what could be seen as a rather unprofessional desire to stay here.

But, on the other hand, he was nearing the end of his shift so there would be another rapid response vehicle available very soon and maybe he needed to take a bit more time to assess this situation. Driving through a shop window had the potential to be quite a serious mechanism of injury, didn’t it?

And...what if Brie needed his help? Her crew partner was looking a bit pale himself. Had he come back to work too soon after getting that nasty concussion? Jonno wasn’t about to have Brie left to deal with everything on her own, like she had when he’d found her looking after that woman who’d nearly been murdered by her husband.

So he walked into the café with Brie. Side by side. He could see the back of the man, presumably the doctor the police officer had told him about. Had he happened to be in here for a coffee, perhaps? They weren’t far away from St Nick’s children’s hospital here. Whoever he was, the man was crouched beside the open driver’s door, his hand on the wrist of the elderly driver, who was still gripping his steering wheel and staring straight ahead.
