Teon held her close until the aftershocks of her climax subsided. She brought her arm up across her forehead, shielding her eyes from him as she released a shuddering, shaky breath. He hoped that meant she had enjoyed it.

He bent his head to kiss her shoulder and her beautiful chest.

‘Have you done this a lot?’ she whispered, biting her lip.

‘What?’ He lifted his face to look at her as his fingers drew little circles over her silky thighs.

‘Have there been many other women, while you were away?’ she asked, lowering her arm and turning to look at him.

He frowned. ‘You are referring to the things you’ve heard about me.’

‘Yes.’

He flattened his hand over her stomach, his fingertips trailing over the wispy lines of ink on her hip. ‘The rumours aren’t true, Revna. I haven’t taken a woman to bed since we married. My father may have tainted my ideas of marriage, shattering the idyll, but I would never do that... I’m not guilty of any infidelity, if that’s what you’re asking.’

‘Why not?’

Her cheeks were pink from the pleasure he’d given her, her eyes bright and her features softened and relaxed, and she looked more beautiful than he’d ever seen her. ‘I mean, it’s been a long time, hasn’t it? For a man like you...’ she said. ‘And you weren’t exactly pining for me.’

He smiled, raising an eyebrow. ‘A man like me?’

She shrugged. ‘You know what I mean.’

‘I’m not sure I do. But we were much too busy fighting at the garrison. And there was your father to consider,’ he said seriously. ‘I knew if I was unfaithful, your father could break our alliance. I’d gone through with the damn marriage...’

‘Of course! You’re so complimentary.’

He shrugged. ‘It’s the truth. I have been celibate these past years, knowing I could not be intimate with anyone else in case it should bring war to these lands. My goal has always been to create stability, not cause more unrest.’

‘So, what you’re saying is, I’m your only option?’

He gave a short laugh, not even dignifying that with any words of response.

She frowned. ‘Celibate...does that include...the things we’ve just done?’

‘There has been nothing, no one, since we married. I assume there hasn’t for you either?’

‘You know there hasn’t!’

And he grinned. He knew it was the truth. He could tell by the way she’d gasped in surprise and panted out her pleasure that she’d never been touched before. It had made him so hard and excited, so determined to make it good for her.

‘What about before we were wed?’ she asked.

His fingers stilled. ‘Enough of the questions! I’m not a monk, Revna...of course there were women before, but none of any importance.’

For a time, after he’d discovered his father had had an affair, he had overcompensated for a lack of satisfaction with his life with too much ale and far too many women, yet there had never been any real intimacy. And he’d never thought of the consequences, the way he had to now. He’d never cared about any of them, or their pleasure.
