Chapter Nine

Emma should have been surprised when Carson announced his intention to move out a couple of weeks later, but she wasn’t. Somewhere in the back of her mind she’d known that the marriage couldn’t survive without communication and yet she lacked the strength... or was it the will... to force a confrontation with him.

She rarely saw him at work, and had no idea if anyone in the firm even knew that they were separated. She did know that he was working incredibly long hours, and that his star was rising, but other than that she heard very little. The weeks and months slipped quickly by and she established a routine for herself of visiting her parents every couple of months. Her work life was satisfying except for the lack of pro bono work. She was allowed to handle a few foreclosures, but they weren’t enough to make her feel that she was making a difference. As the second anniversary of Ryan’s death approached, she began to feel stifled. The firm paid her well and Bradley Carson had once again demonstrated his generosity by paying off the note on the apartment, which had appreciated greatly in value. But she was treading water, and she knew it.

“Emma,” said Steffie, sitting down in the chair in front of her desk. “I’ve tried not to interfere since you lost your son.” She lifted her shoulders. “Why would I? You’re one of the department’s best producing lawyers... which is why I want to talk to you.”

Emma frowned, but said nothing.

Steffie leaned forward. “What can we offer you to ensure that you stay with the firm? I told the boss that you’d like more pro bono work and he said if that’s what it takes, okay.”

Was her supervisor a mind reader? She must be, because Emma hadn’t discussed either her personal situation or her growing malaise with her position. But the offer of more pro bono work was too late. She’d made up her mind the moment she received the phone call last night.

She rarely watched television, but for some reason the previous evening she’d felt compelled to turn it on to the Los Angeles channel. At first the daily Hollywood report was just background noise but then she thought she heard Maddie’s name and she turned in time to see a replay of Maddie’s interview with a woman reporter.

“I don’t believe it,” she’d said aloud, walking across the living area until she stood directly in front of the television. And there was her friend, magnificent as always in her defiance, but Emma could tell that she was dying inside.

The phone call came a couple of hours later and Emma hadn’t hesitated. Madison’s invitation to the friends’ reunion at Lianne’s ranch had come at the perfect time. The Gransome Group had dozens of lawyers who could step in and take over her files without causing the slightest inconvenience to either the clients or the firm.

Emma glanced at the photo of Ryan on her desk and smiled.
