Chapter eight

Opening Day

Opening morning of hunting season is here!

Rob had told me to meet at his house at 5 a.m. and don't be late.

I woke up around 3:30 a.m. because I couldn't sleep.

This season was going to be different for me. In past hunting seasons I would shoot a deer, but I wasn't that excited about it. This season I had learned so much from Rob that I couldn't wait to put my new skills to work and maybe even bag a big one in front of those guys.

The first deer I shot was from my dad and mom's deck of their house. I had put on my cow slippers to go out and get some wood for the wood stove and a buck was standing by the rabbit pens. I quietly snuck back into the house where everyone was still sleeping. I snuck into my dad and mom's bedroom, opened their closet door not to wake anyone, snuck back out, slowly, like Elmer Fudd a stocked my buck. I lifted the rifle, finally found the deer in the scope and pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. I looked at the rifle and seen that the safety was on. I clicked it forward, found the deer again and pulled the trigger for the second time.

KABOOM. The buck dropped dead. I was maybe thirty yards from him, standing in my cow night-gown with my cow slippers on.

My dad woke up when he heard the shot. I could here him now running through the house. He slid the glass door open that lead to the deck.

"What happened? You ok?" He asked, while looking at me holding the rifle toward the ground.

"I just shot a buck."

"Why did you shoot a rabbit with my rifle?"

"Look." I pointed past the rabbit pens.

"A buck deer!"

My dad looked at where I was pointing.

"By GOD you did." Dad said surprisingly looking at the deer carcass. "Does it have horns?" "I can't see and horns."

"I saw horns through my scope." I replied, now wondering to myself if it did have horns.

I started walking towards it.

"Put another shell in the chamber in case it is still alive."

I stopped in my tracks and reloaded his rifle. I slowly walked up to the deer and took the barrel of the rifle and poked the buck between the eyes, like I had seen my dad do to the steers he butchered.

"It's dead, and it has horns."

"Good job my girl! Now, come inside and get dressed, and grab your knife and then we'll take care of it."

All the adrenalin I had was now at its peak in my body. I had just shot my first buck, in my pajamas and slippers.

Dad showed me how to gut the deer. then we hung it up by its back legs and I skinned it out. I knew how to skin, that was my job when we were butchering cattle. Once it was skinned and clean of all hair, we wrapped it up in a sheet and let it hang.
