Chapter Thirteen

“Marcos!” In an instant she was on her feet, and in another she was in his arms.

He kissed her, right there in front of the horses where everyone could see them. Then he held her off a little and smiled down at her. “My lady. I have missed you sorely.”

He looked marvelous in the gathering dusk, the setting sun glinting off his earring, his green eyes smoldering with longing.

“I’ve missed you, too,” she cried, all modesty gone. Some sane part of herself was standing aside, trying to tell her she was making a horrible mistake. She wasn’t listening. She’d wanted to see him and he was here. That was all that mattered.

“Walk with me,” Marcos said. She put her hand in his and let him lead her further into the woods.

They walked in silence for a while, then Marcos said, “You spoke most harshly to Juan.”

She turned to stare at him. “He told you what I said to him?”

Marcos nodded, “He said you were angry with him. He said you do not understand a Rom’s pride.”

“I was angry,” she said. “Margarita loves him so much. He loves her too. But he won’t take her back.”

“He said other things, too,” Marcos said softly. “Things about your heart. Where it belongs.”

The blood flooded her cheeks. “He should not have told you such things.” She tried to change the subject. “Did you travel far this trip?”

“Very far.” His eyes were warm. “All but my heart. My heart has been with you. Always it will be so.”

Her heart pounded under her blouse. She wet her lips nervously. “Oh Marcos, you shouldn’t say such things to me. I’m not gypsy.”

His fingers squeezed hers. “But you are mine.”

“Yes,” she said, giving up all effort to deny the truth. “Yes.” She turned to him, her breath wanting to desert her. “Marcos, make me a gypsy. Please! Margarita told me it can be done.”

Edward stared at her shining face. God, he could hardly believe his good fortune. He’d needed to touch her again, to hold her, that’s why he’d asked the queen to send Pedro with the message, but he’d never imagined this. He didn’t like deceiving her. But if he told her the truth now, she’d feel betrayed, outraged at his deception. Then he’d never have a chance to win her back.

He stared into her eyes, those blue blue eyes. “Are you sure, my lady? Some women fear the sight of blood. There is also some pain that goes with the rite.”

“I don’t care. Oh, Marcos, please. I know we can’t marry.” She hesitated, hanging her head a little. “I know you haven’t asked me to jump the broomstick. Even if you did, I couldn’t. I have a sister, and she has a baby. I’m the only one to care for them.” She raised her head and looked him full in the face. “But I want to carry your blood within me. Always.”

He almost told her then, but fear turned his mouth dry, his blood chill. He couldn’t lose her, his brave Callie.
