Analysing Demand and Allocating Capacity

For each type of work identified, the amount of work that flows into the project needs to be analyzed. It is best if you have historical data to make a quantitative analysis. If you do not have any past data, then a derived subjective analysis will suffice to get going.

The demand analysis provides inputs to form the cadences and the kind of team structure required to handle the demand. For example, in the technology based model, the demand analysis would provide the approximate capacity required to handle requests specific to a particular technology. This would help the manager to allocate team members according to their technical skills. Similarly, in other models, the capacity can be allocated based on the business domain skills, or expertise in handling work item types such as data fixes, user queries, and service requests or capacity can be allocated based on the skills in handling expedite or urgent class requests.
