Black Scots
Enterprising young men from many parts of Scotland head west, keen to make their fortunes. Many are employed as managers on Scots-owned plantations, marry African slaves and set them free. Some Scots settle in America, but others return home with pockets full of money. They build fine houses, and also give generously to good causes. Sad but true, some of Scotlandâs best-known schools and hospitals are paid for by former slave-managers.
More happily, returning Scots also bring their wives and children home with them. Around 1800, there are records of Black children attending school in the city of Inverness and elsewere.
