I wanted to get Season a Christmas gift, just for the simple fact that she and I had become cool while I’d been here. I ain’t want shit in return, just thought it’d be dope to give something to somebody who’d honestly made my Christmas bearable.

Beforehand, I didn’t know how a nigga was gon’ get through this holiday, but she’d made it fucking possible and easier than I’d imagined.

Someone came to stand beside me as I scanned the cases filled with diamond jewels at the Cherry Oak Bay mall jewelry store. When I looked over, I spotted Mayor Woodard.

“Such beautiful pieces, huh?” He grinned down at the bracelets, only glancing my way briefly.

“Yeah, they are.” I nodded.

“I plan to get a few things for my wife. Who are you shopping for?”

“Is that yo’ business?” I frowned.

I wasn’t even trying to be rude; I just didn’t understand why the fuck he needed to know who the fuck I was buying jewelry for. As long as it wasn’t his bitch, he needed to keep it moving. As soon as the thought crossed my mind, the reasoning hit me.

“Well, I wasn’t trying to be intrusive. I was simply asking. I was making conversation. I’m the mayor of this town, and I try to be friendly with everyone. Steven Woodard.” He reached to shake my hand, but I kept my own hands in my pockets.

“I don’t need no friends, especially when I don’t live here.” I slipped around him.

“At the tree lighting ceremony, I saw you talking to my wife, and afterwards, she seemed to be a bit off.”

There it was. I knew his muthafuckin’ ass was here to press me about Alisah.

“And?”

“And I want to know how you even know her? I know you don’t live here because I’ve never seen you around. All of sudden you return, and my wife is talking to you all the time.”

“I wouldn’t consider us chatting at a fucking tree ceremony as all the time, mayor.”

“No, but someone else saw you two speaking at the Medallion. Again, how do you know my wife?”

“Usually, I would curse you the fuck out for all of this shit, but since it’s Christmas and I really don’t give a fuck about the situation, I’ll oblige you. Alisah and I went to high school together.”

“You’re from here?”

“Nah, I just went to high school with her,” I replied sarcastically.

“What were you two talking about on both occasions?”

“Why don’t you ask yo’ fucking wife what we talked about?” I closed the space between us, brows furrowed. “Ooooh, you don’t want her to know a nigga got you feeling insecure, huh?” I laughed.

“Is it an affair? A simple yes or no will do.”

“Like I said, ask ya wife. She the one that owes yo’ ass an explanation for who she talks to and what the fuck was talked about, nigga, not me.”

The mayor nodded slowly, mouth twisted the fuck up like he was ready to handle me, but we both knew better.

“Well—“

“Don’t approach me or ask me shit again about yo’ wife, my nigga.
