I wanted to get Season a Christmas gift, just for the simple fact that she and I had become cool while Iâd been here. I ainât want shit in return, just thought itâd be dope to give something to somebody whoâd honestly made my Christmas bearable.
Beforehand, I didnât know how a nigga was gonâ get through this holiday, but sheâd made it fucking possible and easier than Iâd imagined.
Someone came to stand beside me as I scanned the cases filled with diamond jewels at the Cherry Oak Bay mall jewelry store. When I looked over, I spotted Mayor Woodard.
âSuch beautiful pieces, huh?â He grinned down at the bracelets, only glancing my way briefly.
âYeah, they are.â I nodded.
âI plan to get a few things for my wife. Who are you shopping for?â
âIs that yoâ business?â I frowned.
I wasnât even trying to be rude; I just didnât understand why the fuck he needed to know who the fuck I was buying jewelry for. As long as it wasnât his bitch, he needed to keep it moving. As soon as the thought crossed my mind, the reasoning hit me.
âWell, I wasnât trying to be intrusive. I was simply asking. I was making conversation. Iâm the mayor of this town, and I try to be friendly with everyone. Steven Woodard.â He reached to shake my hand, but I kept my own hands in my pockets.
âI donât need no friends, especially when I donât live here.â I slipped around him.
âAt the tree lighting ceremony, I saw you talking to my wife, and afterwards, she seemed to be a bit off.â
There it was. I knew his muthafuckinâ ass was here to press me about Alisah.
âAnd?â
âAnd I want to know how you even know her? I know you donât live here because Iâve never seen you around. All of sudden you return, and my wife is talking to you all the time.â
âI wouldnât consider us chatting at a fucking tree ceremony as all the time, mayor.â
âNo, but someone else saw you two speaking at the Medallion. Again, how do you know my wife?â
âUsually, I would curse you the fuck out for all of this shit, but since itâs Christmas and I really donât give a fuck about the situation, Iâll oblige you. Alisah and I went to high school together.â
âYouâre from here?â
âNah, I just went to high school with her,â I replied sarcastically.
âWhat were you two talking about on both occasions?â
âWhy donât you ask yoâ fucking wife what we talked about?â I closed the space between us, brows furrowed. âOoooh, you donât want her to know a nigga got you feeling insecure, huh?â I laughed.
âIs it an affair? A simple yes or no will do.â
âLike I said, ask ya wife. She the one that owes yoâ ass an explanation for who she talks to and what the fuck was talked about, nigga, not me.â
The mayor nodded slowly, mouth twisted the fuck up like he was ready to handle me, but we both knew better.
âWellââ
âDonât approach me or ask me shit again about yoâ wife, my nigga.
