PERSEPHONE

If I didn’t already know Hades was the devil, he proves it tonight by forbidding me to eat my cheeseburger in his car. When we finally return to his mansion, I’m hangry as hell.

“There. We’re home. You can stop crying about it.”

I try not to feel anything about his usage of the word “home.” It makes it sound like we live together and this is our home. Unfortunately, the alcohol made my barriers flimsy, and not even my aggravation at being denied food keeps my stupid heart from swelling with emotions it has no business feeling.

I’m the first out of the car, and I stomp like a child in my old cowboy boots all the way to the kitchen. When Hades catches up with me, I’m already chewing a mouthful of burger.

“Did you leave any for me?” He pulls the greasy bag toward him and fishes out the fries.

“Hey! Those are mine,” I say with my mouth half-full.

He takes a bite of one. “I paid for them.”

His comment rubs me the wrong way, probably because it reminds me that he believes I belong to him too.

“Fine, eat them all. I hope you choke on them.”

I take another aggressive bite of my cheeseburger but keep glaring at him.

Hades remains unaffected by my temper tantrum. He leaves the bag alone and walks to the bar in the living room.

I wish he had yelled at me. Now my mean outburst sits heavily in my stomach, making me lose my appetite. I set the burger down and go look in the fridge for a bottle of water.

Hades returns to the kitchen, carrying a bottle of tequila and two shot glasses.

“What’s that for?”

“I think we both need drinks.”

I furrow my brow, ready to argue, but think better of it. I didn’t have the chance to finish my martini, so I think I can handle a shot of tequila without losing my mind. Maybe it’ll help me release all this pent-up aggression. If I don’t, I’ll lash out at Hades, and I’m not sure if he deserves all my rage tonight.

“Yeah we do.”

He fills both glasses and then slides one toward me. Then he raises his, and we drink them at the same time. I forgot to ask for the lime and salt and almost choke when the tequila leaves a scorching path down my throat.

“God, this stuff is strong,” I say.

“You’ve never had tequila before?”

I shake my head. “No. All alcohol does is help people make stupid decisions.”

He chuckles. “You’re not wrong. It’s probably why you’re still a virgin.”

Heat spreads through my cheeks. “Do you have to keep reminding me of that?”

“Don’t get mad. I didn’t mean to offend you.”

I drop my eyes to the counter. “I know. It’s just… if I wasn’t a virgin, I wouldn’t be in this situation.”

Hades walks over. “Please don’t regret your life choices because of it.”

“I don’t.” I lift my chin, and our gazes collide.

A powerful yearning hits me then. I want to forget about everything that happened tonight and get lost in one of his kisses.
