Chapter Five

Amaro felt himself fairly vibrating with energy. The thought that he might be moments away from cementing his bond with his Beloved had every inch of his body primed and ready to bring her to nearly unbearable pleasure while marking her with his bite.

The thought of feeding from her blood had him clenching his teeth together, grinding his molars as his fangs pricked his bottom lip.

He wanted to back her into the vines, strip her gown from her body, and bury himself inside of her deep enough to lose himself completely.

Amaro wanted to belong to her in every possible way, but until he had shown her how important she was to him, that kind of possession would have to wait.

The door to the adjoining property opened easily enough under his hand, but the death grip that he had on the brass knob flattened the metal in places.

He shook himself and reminded the primal part of his brain that he would need to take care. If he handled her with his new strength, he might hurt her in ways that could not be undone. Physical damage would heal, but the instinctual trust she had for him would be gone. He couldn’t bear to see fear in her eyes when she looked at him.

He already heard it in her voice when she spoke of Sutherland.

The man had tipped his cards when he’d gone after Amaro.

Likely the other man had no idea that Amaro was alive and that was something he didn’t want to change. Not until it was time to confront him. Not until he had the man down on his knees, with his throat exposed.

Rafe had warned him of the temptation that would be. He’d made him think it through time and time again until he learned to keep a tight rein on those feelings. Yes, Sutherland deserved to die, but he would never want Alba to see the destruction or its results.

If he let her see the damage that he could do to Sutherland she might fear the hunger inside him. She might find his soul too dark and grotesque for her.

“Amaro?”

He felt her hand on his chest and he looked down at the sight of it, small and delicate against the endless midnight of his shirt.

He wanted to hold it.

Press kisses on her wrist, her knuckles, and touch her fingertips with his lips.

He wanted to devour her whole.

“Settle.” Her voice reached him through his haze of hunger. “Is something wrong?”

He shook his head, but he felt his jaw clenched tight.

“You look like you’re in pain.”

The growl that purred from his throat was instinctual, desperate. “It’s nothing... nothing I can’t handle.”

She leaned against him and wrapped her arms around his neck. “You don’t have to shoulder it alone, Amaro. Let me in. Let me help you.”

He felt her fingers stroking the soft hairs at the top of his neck, and the warmth of her breath against his chest.

They had lost time together, but he wasn’t going to let any more slip through his fingers.
