Back in Toronto, I drove down to the Gardiner Expressway and then headed west to High Park. I pulled up in front of Safe Harbor to find Sister Celia climbing the front stairs.

I got out of the Volvo. “Hi.”

“Pat. What brings you here?”

“Can we talk for a minute?”

She motioned me to follow her inside. When she opened the door to her rooms at the back of the house, I saw that a lamp was lit on a small table.

“Oskar!” she cried. “What’s going on here?”

Two figures sprang apart on the sofa. Oskar sat up and Farah jumped to her feet, her long hair in disarray.

Oskar really was a fast worker.

He smoothed his sweater. “Sister, this is Farah. My girlfriend.”

“Farah and I have already met,” Sister Celia said. “She and Raad brought dinner to the residents last week.”

Farah stared down at her feet.

I looked hard at her. “And I know Farah too.”

Sister Celia threw me a look of surprise. Farah put on her coat, her eyes still downcast.

Sister Celia’s cat Benny jumped into Oskar’s lap. “Scram!” He threw the cat to the floor and aimed a kick at it. The cat scampered out of his reach.

“Oskar!” Sister Celia cried. She touched Farah’s arm. “Are you all right, dear?”

Farah nodded and glanced at Oskar on the sofa. He looked extremely uncomfortable.

“Raad knows about you and Oskar?” Sister Celia said.

“Please, my brother not understand.”

Sister Celia studied her for a moment, then frowned at Oskar. “You’ll have to meet somewhere else. These are my private rooms.”

“I’ll drive you home, Farah,” I said.

“Farah, you come with me,” Oskar said.

“I go with Pat.” Farah looked at me for the first time. “Please.”

“You wanted to talk about something,” Sister Celia said to me at the front door.

“It can wait.” I didn’t want to talk about Tommy in front of Oskar and Farah. “I’d better get Farah home.”
