Chapter Nineteen

I barely slept.

Between Silas pacing my dorm and then eventually storming out, it was hard to shut my mind off long enough to rest. Plus, the realization that I was actually going through with this very insane thing sent a spike of adrenaline through my body, rendering me unable to fall asleep.

“Large mocha.” Cameron pushes a steaming to-go cup in my direction.

I take the drink and wait for the rest of the group to arrive.

One by one, they come. Deghan eager to eat some food. Lillian with tired eyes. Sydney looking like he hasn’t slept in a week. Silas, brooding in the corner, keeping a little distance but not too much. And finally, Walker, seeming more chipper than usual.

“Now that I have you all in one place, I wanted to make an announcement and give you a choice.” My voice cracks, and it’s difficult to meet the gaze of my anxiously awaiting friends. I knew this would be hard, but I thought telling them this would be the easiest part. Disappointing and worrying your loved ones is never a simple task, though.

“Okay…” Lillian settles into her seat and leans onto her elbows to give me her full attention.

“After some discussion with Headmaster Walker,” I point to him, “I have decided to move forward with the Faustian bargain.”

There are a few gasps, and I’m not exactly sure where they came from. If I had to guess, it was Cam, Deghan, and Lillian.

Knowing how determined I am, Sydney had to have assumed I would wiggle my way into going through with this, and Silas and Walker were already aware.

“This may come as a shock to some of you, but it’s something I feel necessary. I wanted to voice this sooner rather than later so everyone who wants to be involved can be. I don’t want to keep any of this a secret, like I have done in the past. We’re a team, and I want this to be a joint effort. With that being said, though, I do not expect any of you to help or be a part of this. I will hold no judgments if you decide this isn’t for you. You don’t have to make the choice immediately, but it is a rather pressing issue.” I nod toward the salt-and-pepper-haired man again. “Walker will be overseeing and lending a hand.”

“Wait,” Deghan cuts me off. “You’re on board with this?”

Walker politely smiles. “Yes. I think it’s safe to say we are all knowledgeable of Miss Willow’s power and tenacity. This is something she would have done regardless of our support and considering the risks, I think it’s best if I do what I can to make sure she succeeds at this venture.”

“Wow,” Deghan responds quietly. “Well…” He glances around at us and then settles his sights on me. “I’m in.”

Cameron side-eyes Deghan in what I assume to be surprise at how quickly he joined the mission. “That easily?”

Deghan shrugs. “It’s Willow, what did you expect?”

I swallow the worry that creeps up my throat.
