She wanted to tell him a joke, just for the pleasure of seeing his face soften. Of seeing his smile transform the austere planes of his face, drawing her in. She pulled her thoughts up short and returned to the subject they had been discussing. “You said your grandmother is still alive?”

Will nodded, pulling closer to the table, leaning his elbows on it. “My mother’s mother. Jean Payne. She’s a wonderful person.”

For the first time since she had met him, Kelsey heard genuine warmth in Will’s voice, saw his eyes soften and for some unfathomable reason, was jealous of an older lady she had never met.

“She pretty special?”

“Her home was sanctuary for me when I was growing up. We were on the road a lot with my dad’s business. My mom always came along so that meant I came along. We lived in small places—trailers, motel rooms. Hard to get away from each other.” He was silent a moment and Kelsey remembered his oblique comment about his parents’ marriage. “We’d come back to Dawson Creek over the winter season, and I’d often take off to Grandma Jean’s. My parents didn’t really care. I sometimes spent two weeks there before they would come and get me.” He shrugged, as if dismissing the memory.

Kelsey’s warm heart softened even more as she imagined Will as a young boy, not even being missed by his parents.

“What is your grandmother like?”

“Smart. Kind. Wise.” Another smile flitted across his face. He rubbed his chin with his index finger as he looked past her, as if to another place. “She would take me to church. Tell me to listen, to absorb whatever part of God I heard or experienced and save it against the days I would need Him.”

“And did you?”

Will laughed shortly, a humorless laugh. “I tried. But I didn’t go to church enough and the parts I saw of God, I used up very quickly. My parents never went to church, nor did they encourage anything remotely connected to church. When I turned twelve, we moved away from Dawson Creek. I never really connected with another Christian until…” he stopped, laughing again.

“Until what?” Kelsey prompted, her heart warming to this side of Will. She remembered Sunday, how he seemed to absorb everything that went on in church. As if taking his grandmother’s advice.

He looked at her again, his eyes softer, the firmness gone from his features.

Kelsey swallowed, suddenly breathless at the change in him. At his undeniable appeal. At the way his eyes held hers, drawing her in.

“Until I met you,” he said quietly.

Silly that four simple words from Will could create this breathlessness, this feeling that any movement on her part would break something fragile.

Their eyes caught and as they held, everything else around them, the subdued chatter of the other patrons, the faint tinkling of crystal, faded away until there was only Will and her.
