Chapter Ten

"So? My nature doesn't matter. I still need to get out of here."

Mari was nothing if not a realist. For as far back as she could remember, there hadn't been much to feel good about in her life. Maybe if she'd been born into a different life, one with caring parents and a lot more stability, her attitude might have developed differently, too. She might have become an optimist or even an idealist. She might view the world as a welcoming place.

Instead, she'd learned the same lesson over and over again—no one was going to step in to take care of shit, so the sooner she dealt with it, the better.

There was no use denying she was an omega. Mari wasn't particularly happy about it, but that didn't change anything. It would probably prove to be a major pain in the ass, just like everything else, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

And so it was time for Plan B. And Plan B was always the same: get the hell out.

Mari had tried other approaches in the past, but it always ended up the same. Talking things out and finding common ground and working toward solutions didn't work with people who solved conflicts with guns and death, people like Oscar...and Ryder.

She had learned to steel herself against emotions that got in the way, like panic and regret and wishing things were different—until she no longer felt them anymore. It didn't matter that she faced more than her share of trouble. Life wasn't fair, and anyone who thought otherwise was an idiot.

That was why Mari's number one rule was to keep moving at all costs. If she couldn't solve a problem, she'd escape it. If she couldn't escape it, she'd cheat her way out of it. And if all other options were exhausted, she'd fight like hell with everything she had.

Anyone who wasn't prepared to fight was doomed. She'd witnessed what happened when people shut down. The cyclone swallowed them up into its destructive chaos. If it ever set them down again, they were broken beyond repair.

Mari would never let that happen to her. She knew there were no guarantees, but she'd survived so far.

"Fighting is what I do," she told Ryder. "It's what I've always done."

She felt the low rumble through the floor before she heard it, the hairs on the back of her arms rising at the sound.

"Not anymore, it's not. Don't you know what an omega is, Mari?"

Reluctantly, Mari lifted her head and met Ryder’s gaze. Now it was his turn to be deadly serious.

"There's no more 'getting out of here'. There's no more beta world, not for you. This is your home now. And if you don't believe me…"

She knew what he was going to do a fraction of a second before he wrapped his hand gently around her ankle. It wasn't a sexual touch, but the heat came flooding back nonetheless, the longing and the need. He watched her steadily, but she could see the outline of his swollen cock straining against his pants.
