Double Check Your Work
Once you have broken down your high frequency word list and looked up the new vocabulary and grammatical information, you will have a far better understanding of the meaning of the context they came from. Understanding the exact meaning behind the words, however, can be tricky from time to time. It can be very easy to miss the underlying tone and hidden connotation in a foreign language, and this becomes more apparent whenever language is translated. Perhaps you have seen the results of this on photos of funny T-shirts or inappropriately translated signs in Asia. You wouldn't want something similar to happen to you when you spoke or wrote something in Russian, right?
In that case, you should use the English subtitles and translations to double check the meaning of the words. Yet this doesn't mean that you should use English while first watching or reading native Russian. After the 20 minutes or so of immersion time comes to an end, however, it is OK to check the English subtitles and translations to clarify any underlying tone and meaning of the words. It is highly important to make sure that you completely understand what you are trying to learn before you put it into practice. Language textbooks usually provide English translations for this reason.
All this subtitle and translation talk might sound somewhat contradictory, so here's an easier way to think about it. Native materials are for long and extensive reading and listening practice. Subtitles and translations are for short and intensive learning.
