"No!" he said at once. "Don't try it. Find a hotel in Springfield and stay the night." No sooner had he said that than snowflakes began to fal lightly.

"It is almost six o'clock. We might be able to make it by ten or so," she offered, looking up at the snow filling the night skies.

"Coach Ross, consider this an order from the front office. We don't want you getting stranded along the highway in a snow bank. Get a hotel. We'll pay for it. I told Coach Riccio the same thing. He's got the men's team over in Portland with an inch of ice on the roads. Call me in the morning and I'll let you know how things are then." He hung up.

Sheridan folded the phone and stuffed it in her jacket pocket.

"Where would you like to go for dinner? There's no hurry. We aren't going anywhere tonight," she announced with a disgusted smirk.

"You're kidding. Why?" Liz immediately made a mental list of things that needed her attention.

"There's four inches of snow in Ashton already with more expected this evening. Guess it snuck in on them. Dean Carlton wants us to get a hotel and stay overnight in Springfield.

Ed Riccio is stranded in Portland with the men's team, too."

"No," Liz groaned heavily. "I have a test tomorrow and orders to make for the restaurant.

And Becca wasn't scheduled to work tomorrow afternoon. I was." She frowned and scanned the sky. "It isn't snowing that bad. Can't we try to make it? I can help drive if you need me to."

Sheridan shook her head.

"Orders from the boss. He said no." Sheridan smirked as well.

"Damn," Liz muttered as she climbed in the car.

"Maybe we should find a hotel then have dinner. Do you know anything about Springfield?"

"Not much. I know Boston Road. It runs east-west. Riverdale Road runs north-south."

"The Basketbal Hall of Fame is downtown along the river but I don't remember if there was anything close to it or how to get there." Sheridan searched both ways before pulling out onto Chicopee Avenue. "Let's head back north toward Holyoke. It's just a few miles up the road and there should be some hotels right off the highway."

"There's always Northampton," Liz offered.

"How far is that?"

"Fifteen miles or so. Straight north from Holyoke."

Sheridan chuckled.

"What?" Liz asked, studying her face.

"Nothing," she replied as another snicker crept out.

"What is so funny?" Liz insisted.

"From what I've heard, it just seems the words straight and Northampton shouldn't be used in the same sentence." Sheridan raised her eyebrows.

"Oh," Liz replied with a small smile. "Probably not."

"Come on, let's try for Northampton. What do you say?"

"That's fine with me," Liz said. "We'll be closer to Vermont in the morning."

They headed north on the interstate, the snow falling faster and heavier as they moved north. By the time they turned off on the Northampton exit the pavement was covered with white and the air was thick with large flakes. Sheridan's rear wheel drive and big horsepowered car made steering a chore.
