Chapter Eleven

A rosy-cheeked maid curtsied as she closed the door of the bedchamber Lucy and Reid had been escorted to for the night. Alone again, Reid caught her in his arms. “Now, where were we?” Not that it would be an arduous task, but he had to do something to distract Lucy from undoing what they had accomplished this night.

“We have the king’s cooperation. I’ve learned over the years of dealing with the man that it is best not to press him too hard. We don’t want him to change his mind, do we?”

With her chin high, Lucy didn’t bother to hide her frustration. “Nay,” she said, balling her fingers at her sides. “It’s just that I had hoped for more.”

Reid was learning that his wife was stubborn, headstrong, uncontrollable at times, and infinitely loyal to those she loved. There was a rawness of pain in her that needed, nay, demanded an outlet. “I know you are frightened for your sister. I am too. But we must believe all will be well until we reach her.”

“But what if she suffers? What if they—”

He pulled her closer, lowered his head and kissed her. Given distraction was his aim, he didn’t hold back. He parted her lips, surged into her mouth, and laid claim.

Instead of pulling back, she accepted his challenge, crushing his lips with her own. The fire between them leapt to life, hungry and greedy. She made no secret of her desire as she slid deeper into his arms, pressed against him, and invited him to engage in the battle they had started belowstairs.

Without shifting his mouth from hers, he slid off his tunic and tossed it onto the floor. He could feel the tension flowing from her, enveloping him in its power. She wanted control of the situation, and he had no desire to wrest it from her.

He left her mouth to run his lips over her cheek, her neck, breathing in the scent of her as he pulled the pins from her hair, setting it free. He grabbed the fullness and allowed it to slide through his fingers. It felt like heavy, heated satin. He fanned the length of her tresses over her shoulders, her back, before he brought his fingers to her nape, angling her head back so he could explore her mouth in deep intimate strokes. He took the kiss deeper then, tasting her, breathing her in, wanting to immerse himself in her very essence. She tasted sweet and smelled like the heather in the meadow below Redhouse Castle after a Scottish rain.

Don’t think. Don’t stop. She didn’t want to think of Esme’s possible suffering, or what the king had meant by her being Reid’s third betrothal. Once she started to think of those things, she wouldn’t be able to stop. So Lucy forced the thoughts aside as her mind reeled and splintered beneath Reid’s assault. She wanted to forget everything about the real world, staying instead in this dark and sensual place where Reid had taken her.
