Chapter 3: Duplicity

SAN JUAN, PR, JANUARY 2

It had been weeks since Mercedes had heard anything from the feds about helping her out of the enormous mess she’d made of her life, and she was starting to get really frustrated. At her wit’s end, she was pondering the thought of running, which had always been her natural instinct. But she’d done that before, and that’s why she was in this predicament. A few seconds after thinking about this, she heard the faint ring tone of the cell phone she’d been sent by Agent Kendrick, and quickly ran to answer his call.

“Hello?”

“Mercedes, this is Frank Kendrick. Plans are underway on your case. Hold tight. An agent will be in Puerto Rico by the 15th of this month and will reach out to you.”

“Oh, thank God,” Mercedes said.

“Everything will be just fine. Keep doing what you’re doing. It won’t be much longer,” Kendrick said reassuringly, as he hung up on his end.

Finally! Mercedes thought to herself. She’d spent the entire holiday season trying to be patient and enjoy some part of it, but there was this awful sense of dread that she just couldn’t shake. The sound of Kendrick’s voice had calmed her doubts and fears, or at least kept them at bay for the moment. She could be patient for a little while longer. A two-week trial would be starting at 10:00 a.m., and she was hopeful that her nighttime personal services wouldn’t be required during the course of it.

Arriving at the courthouse an hour early, she hid out in her office until 20 minutes prior to the proceedings. She didn’t trust any of the court reporters in this courthouse. They all seemed nice enough to her face, but she’d heard most of them gossiping about other women. In light of that, she wasn’t going to risk letting them on the inside of her secret life. She had no one on this stupid island that she could trust, but she was hoping that was about to change. She wondered how someone could be surrounded by so many people and simultaneously be so lonely.

Court was about to begin, and a new lawyer from the states approached with his business card, introducing himself.

“Good morning, Madame Court Reporter. I’m Jake Fresby, here on the Menendez matter.”

“Good morning, Mr. Fresby,” Mercedes said, extending her hand for a shake. “Mercedes Cruz. Welcome to Puerto Rico. It’s very nice to meet you.”

As the young attorney walked off, she smiled on the outside, but she smirked on the inside, thinking to herself that he had no idea that Madame Court Reporter took on a completely different meaning for her. She couldn’t wait to walk away from this life and all that it entailed, never to hear that title again.

Langley, Virginia, January 3

Callie’s alarm went off at 4:00 a.m., because arrangements had been made for her to be picked up and taken to the FBI’s undercover agents training camp just outside Washington, DC. She’d be there for an intensive boot camp personally designed for her and her operation.
