24. Boaden

A fter Boaden is bathed and changed, he is permitted to meet with Queen Kyria. She’s sitting next to her father, both on their white thrones, backs straight and regal. Kyria, with her red hair flowing down past her waist and lavender eyes on skin as pale as the snow, is a stunning sight to see. She wears a thin gold crown that sits on her forehead. The green jewel in the center is a magical stone to give its wearer enhanced abilities.

Lord Everon, Kyria’s father, with his salt and pepper hair and wrinkles forming around his eyes, has grown older at a hundred and fifty-seven, but he’s still strong. They both stand as the group approaches. Boaden looks for Daelyn, but Madison and she are not in the room. They’d parted ways once they walked through the castle doors.

“What news do my finest warriors bring me?” Kyria says. “I must say I’m surprised you’re back so soon. Something must be wrong or you’d have sent a note.”

Boaden, Gord, and the brothers kneel. Gord stands, but the other three remain on one knee. “I wish we had good news, and there’s too much to tell for a simple note, your highness. To start, Madison’s daughter refused Prince Enden’s marriage proposal.”

Kyria purses her lips and walks down the glossy white steps. She’s wearing black pants fitted to her thin thighs and white boots that reach just above her knees. Her white top looks like a half dress: the front cuts off at the hips, but the back falls in waves behind her, trailing on the ground. “And why did she do such a thing?”

Gord answers, “She didn’t know of the plan or that she is Delhoon.”

Boaden and Kyria catch each other’s gaze, and she gives him a small smile.

“You’re telling me that Madison Magnevera, one of my great warriors, didn’t tell her own child she is Delhoon? This girl believed she was Hesstian her entire life?” She glances over her shoulder at her father who rolls his eyes.

“Disappointing,” Lord Everon says. “She was one of my best students.”

Gord bows his head. “But, your highness, if I may. Madison’s daughter, Daelyn, will do anything to get her father out of Hesstian prison.” He looks past Kyria, “Lord Everon, surely you remember Jordane.”

Kyria taps her fingers on her thigh. “Is he alive? I thought he was dead years ago. At least that’s what was reported.”

“Madison had a premonition that proves he lives.”

Kyria nods. “Well, that’s good news at least.” She looks at Boaden and gestures with her hand for him to rise. “My youngest and most impressive spy and assassin. Boaden, what would you propose we do? I’m interested in your thoughts.”

Gord stares at him, jaw clenched, no doubt willing him to move forward with the plan. “Uh, what would I do?”

Kyria raises an eyebrow. “Yes, about the girl. Should I send her back so my idea of getting Enden to look like a traitor and assassinate King Rolland can work, or should I devise another plan?”

Boaden’s palms begin to sweat.
