Complementary and Alternative Health Care

THE UPWARD TREND of complementary and alternative medical therapies shows great promise for the future of health care. In a rather detailed description of natural based treatments put forth in the British Journal of General Practice, it states, “Diagnosis, treatment, and/or prevention which complements mainstream medicine by contributing to a common whole, satisfying a demand not met by orthodoxy, or diversifying the conceptual frameworks of medicine”.1,2

Led by consumer pressure, there has been an unmistakable rise in complementary medicine awareness and medical research,3 product brands and their usage,4 a wider range of available alternative therapies,5 more insurance providers6 offering support for these treatments, and the integration of complementary and alternative courses into the majority of U.S. medical schools.7,8 Non-orthodox and non-pharmaceutical treatments have always been more prevalent in countries other than North America, but are now beginning to make great strides here as well.9,10,11,12
