ancing with his new bride, Grant could scarcely believe how much his life had changed in just a few short weeks, the love of the woman in his arms the biggest change of all. Astrid laughed as she spun about, holding his hands, and he gazed his fill of her, thinking how beautiful she was, vibrantly alive and joyous, fiercely independent and determined.

“So serious.” She put her hand to his cheek as the music ended. “What are you thinking, Grant?”

“That I don’t deserve you.” The woman who’d worked herself to the bone to keep her family’s ranch solvent, who’d thrown herself into the dirt to save a neighbor’s child from being trampled, who’d pulled a shotgun and been fully prepared to blow two miscreants straight to heavenly judgment when they threatened her sister?

No, he didn’t deserve her.

Since she’d incomprehensibly decided to accept him, however, he intended to spend the rest of his life working his tail off to ensure she never regretted her decision.

“You’re thinking too much again.” Ever practical, Astrid shook her head at Grant. “You might be the best thing that’s ever happened to Rattlesnake Ridge. You’re certainly the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Considering how dramatically her life had changed since his arrival in town, he had to concede she might well look at him that way. From doing a man’s job on the ranch to a comfortable job at the bank and her own business about to get off the ground, Astrid Anderssen - Astrid Watson now - had come a long way in a short period of time, even without taking their marriage into account.

Still, Grant thought, he’d gained far more. Astrid represented everything he loved about Rattlesnake Ridge: tough, starkly beautiful, uncompromising, and intensely rewarding, they were both now irrevocably home as far as Grant was concerned. He couldn’t imagine ever wanting to be anywhere else, or with anyone else. And even though he still had mixed feelings about his uncle and the legacy Liston Garrett had left him, he would always be grateful his uncle had, for whatever reason, made the decision to call Grant back to the Ridge.

Yes, Grant Watson thought as Astrid smiled up at him, her eyes shining with love, returning to Rattlesnake Ridge was the best thing he could possibly have done.

The End
