Amy read Billy’s text twice before she closed her eyes. She didn’t want to feel abandoned, but no matter how much she pushed back against the pain of missing Billy, the hollow feeling stayed with her.

She knew life with Billy would be tough. He'd be there then he'd be called away at a moment's notice. Her mother had known when her father would take off, but still, those absences were tough on her mom. Amy had sworn up and down she wouldn't get involved with a military guy, and here she was, her heart involved with a man who made her father's military job look easy.

Pain twisted through her as she read over his text one more time. He wanted her to stay at his house which would offer her safety because the jerk Jeremy wouldn't know where she was. The key to his place was still in her room, the room where she'd been taken from. She shivered and blew out a breath, trying to stay calm. She didn't want to ever go back there, but she had to. Billy had arranged for a neighbor to let Candy out while she was in the hospital, but he needed her to help take care of the dog. This is why he hadn't gotten a dog before. She understood now. Dogs required a lot. They took time to care for.

Amy itched to get out of the hospital. She asked to be released early. Doctor Hull reluctantly agreed to let her go, saying there really wasn’t a reason for her to stick around.

She caught a ride in a taxi. When the driver took off, leaving her at her father's house, fear took over. Billy was right, she couldn't stay here. Walking in the front door, seeing the hall where Jeremy had dragged her from her room, brought dread so thick her knees almost buckled.

Maybe it was just the pain from her injuries, but she knew it was more than the physical, this pain cut at her soul. She stood in the entry hall, staring at the tipped over chair in the path from here to the room where she’d lived. Visceral fear chilled her as it clawed through her, leaving her gasping for air.

The room spun and tilted on its axis. A noise sounded, and she turned. Someone was standing in the doorway she’d left open. Why had she left the door open?

A scream lodged in her throat and she tried to let it loose, but nothing came out. Her breath came in gasps. She backed up, almost falling over her own feet.

“Amy, dear, it’s me, your neighbor. Mrs. Hollingsworth. Are you okay? Should I call someone?”

The words finally broke through. It wasn’t Jeremy back to take her again. Tears came fast and hard.

"Oh, my. I'll call someone if you like," Mrs. Hollingsworth said.

After a few more gasps of air, she pulled a tissue from her pocket and shook her head as she blew her nose, trying to recover. “No, I…” Amy sucked in air then blew it out slowly, striving to ignore the woman’s weird look.
