One client once asked me to walk with him along his old route to primary school. He wanted me to listen to him talking about his schooldays. He’d been bullied and the trauma remained with him, but he felt he couldn’t tell anyone. He felt he might overcome the trauma by going back along his old route and speaking to me about what had happened.

While we were walking, the client kept his head down and didn’t smile at all. When we reached the school gate, he brightened up and was suddenly talkative. He pointed at the school building and yard and fondly recalled the music room. He seemed absorbed in memories that were unconnected to bullying.

He himself said he was undemonstrative and, looking at him, it was difficult to tell what was going on inside. But I think that by the end of our meeting, his spirits had been lifted.
