Sempo’s Garage

Sempo walked into the garage and sat behind the desk. “The Russian government says they’ll honor Japan’s visas. They’ll let refugees travel through their country. But they’ll also close this consulate soon.”

It’s a race against time, Patrick thought.

“Please open the gate,” Sempo said.

Patrick and Boris jogged to the front of the house.

Boris unlocked the gate. He said loudly, “The consul will see you now.”

A joyful cheer went up.

Patrick turned to walk back to the garage.

But a rush of men and women carried him forward.

Patrick felt the crowd pressing. He started to run. He had to reach the garage first.

Sempo sat behind the desk.

Refugees poured into the garage and surrounded him.

The consul raised his eyebrows.

Mei screeched. She darted between Patrick’s feet.

The people in the garage were smooshed against each other.

Boris pushed his way in. “There are so many. What do we do?” he asked.

Patrick had an idea. He moved forward and waved his arms to stop the crowd.
