Chapter Five

Adam didn’t play with her. He wouldn’t look at her, and she was his mother. Seri tapped down the frustration her son was causing her. The brat kept asking for Daddy. He never utters a word, and now that she has left Roman, he calls for the man that had nothing to do with his conception. She shook her head. Adam was expected to do great things by both her and Malachai. She combed her fingers through her hair and swept the strands up into a ponytail.

“Aren’t you hungry, baby?” Her tone was cajoling. She stood. “We have a long trip ahead of us.”

Her dad, Malachai, explained why he’d had her meet him at the Arizona compound. She was the distraction he needed to move everything up north. The secret she’d worked so hard to hide was out. Most council members and Alphas probably knew she was Malachai’s daughter. They were trying to track her daddy through her. Those fucking idiots in the Volkshire and Black Mountain Packs probably thought she had all the kids and they were moving them into Mexico. No so. After she shared a dinner with Malachai and he had an opportunity to play with his grandson he left in a convoy for Minnesota.

He’d established an estate there close to the Canadian border. A lab had been set up to continue testing shifters and splicing genes to create the ultimate predator. Human and not quite human. The abilities of shifters without ever having to endure the pain of becoming the beast. Her reliance on her animal was all she had, and recently the beast remained elusive. She closed her eyes waiting for the animal to appear in her mind. It never came. She snorted. Even that bitch feared her. Her wolf would be sorry when she wasn’t needed anymore.

“Adam. Come, let’s go eat.” She motioned her hand for the child to come to her. There must be something wrong with her. She couldn’t work up the urge to mother him. He was simply a means to an end.

He shook his head and continued playing with the wolf figurine that Roman had given him.

She marched over to him and snatched him up by the arms. “When I tell you to do something, you obey me.” The toy tumbled from his fingers. He flailed his legs, and tiny growls escaped through his lips.

She held him close to her face, staring into his eyes. Through his irises a tiny wolf stared back at her. Her son was exceptional. He snapped at her nose, his little teeth clacking together. Seri held him away from her.

“You little shit. Roman is not your daddy! He doesn’t want you! All you have is me!” She screamed at the top of her lungs, shaking him.

When he went still, so did she. Adam stared at her, his expression devoid of any emotion. His lips moved and slowly one word fell from his mouth. “Daddy.”

A few guards entered the study. “We’ll be ready to leave in two hours.
