I jolt awake, pouring in sweat from the nightmare I was just trapped in. I was back in that alleyway, but this time Jase didn’t make it and wasn’t able to save me. Snake took me straight to Yankee, who spent hours beating me and letting any man who paid the right amount do whatever they wanted to me. I woke up just before he tried to take my life.

Climbing out of bed, I tiptoe into the bathroom, not wanting to wake Axel so early after such a long night. Turning on the shower, I undress and climb in. Letting the hot water wash away the feeling of other men’s hands on my body. Real or not, I swear I can still feel them like they were just here. Once my skin is red from scrubbing so hard, I put my back to the tile wall sliding down it; I pull my knees to my chest, crying once again over everything that has happened. All because I got too close to one shitty man. I must have woken Axel at some point because the next thing I know, I am sitting in his lap under the spray, telling him about my dream. He assures me again that Jase is fine and promises to take me to see for myself. Then he promises not to let anything happen to me, that he will find Yankee and take him down.

Axel helps me wash my hair before helping me out of the shower, drying and dressing me. Then he takes me to the kitchen, where he fixes me some coffee and something to eat before letting Ariel out to use the bathroom. Once I have eaten, and he is sure I have calmed down, he takes me back to Doc’s place to check on Jase. Everything looks just like it did last night. All white and sterile. Jase is sitting up in bed watching a little TV that Doc set up for him and drinking a glass of water.

“Hey, Red,” he says with a big smile when we walk in the room. Running over, I throw myself at him, temporarily forgetting about the gunshot wound. “Shit, Red,” he hisses through clenched teeth.

“Oh shit. I’m sorry. I’m so, so, so sorry.” I say quickly pulling back from him, but he refuses to let me go, pulling me into a tighter hug.

“I’m glad you’re okay, Red,” he whispers against the top of my head before gently kissing my hair.

“Hands off my girl, prospect,” Axel growls from behind me. Pulling me out of Jase’s arms and into his.

“All good, Pres. I know she’s yours and I’m not trying to steal her. She’s like a sister to me,” Jase chuckles, holding his side in pain.

“Ignore him,” I say, elbowing Axel in the ribs. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m good. Doc says I can go home tomorrow, just have to take it easy for a while. No more gun shots for me for at least a week,” he jokes.

“No more gun shots for you ever,” I say, smacking his arm, making him laugh again.
