Avery stared at the tank of blue-green water. There was no way she was getting into that and fully submerging herself.

“Avery, it’s just like when you learned to swim. You’ll go under and then come up when you need air.”

The Healer came forward and said, “Actually, Joyful One, that is not correct. She will be able to continue breathing as normal while submerged. Gaiata is sentient and restores healing and life when any other living being comes into contact with it.”

“Is that so?” Elle asked, not quite believing him.

“Yes, why don’t we have the Wise One take a test run? A simple Earthian three-minute test to see if she is able to stay submerged.” He moved to help Avery step into the water tank.

Avery did as he directed and stepped in.

“Whoa! This water—”

“It’s gaiata,” the Healer corrected.

“My bad, gaiata. It feels amazing.”

“Now Wise One, I would like for you to lie all the way back until you are submerged. Allow the gaiata to surround you and float within it. It will know how much to submerge you if you allow yourself to relax completely.”

“Sure thing doc, but one more thing. Why do I have to be in this tank anyway?”

The Healer looked sad for a moment as he said, “I hate to tell you this, but your abductors injected a potentially lethal cocktail of some of your most addictive drugs. It appears they wanted you to either overdose, or die a painful death from withdrawal by leaving you down in that dungeon of a place.” He paused, as Elle went over to Avery to comfort her. When he saw that Avery refused to cry or give those bastards another care, he continued, “The gaiata will detox you. You only need to be submerged for two Earthian hours. You can even take a nap if you’d like as you rest. Allow the gaiata to restore you to health.”

Avery was determined to get that poison out of her system. She’d never done drugs in her life and she didn’t want to suffer the pain that she’d seen many go through trying to purge it out of their system.

“Hey doc, I have another question. Why didn’t I have symptoms of overdose or withdrawal? I don’t remember feeling anything like what I’ve seen.”

“Oh, you did. From Surt’s account, you were in full-blown overdose when they found you. It was Counselor Rilic who got you to stay with us and not go into cardiac arrest.” Then the Healer stared past her for a moment, as if his eyes were looking at something distant, and spoke, “The Goddess has called you to continue the work of her warriors. You will bring healing to many by the fruit of your seed to the land and the fruit of the womb to the people. You have been brought here of the Goddess’s will, oh daughters of wise counsel and joy.” Then he returned his attention to the room as if nothing happened.

Avery cut an eye to Elle, who stood there transfixed to the spot.
