CHAPTER 10

Leon

I can’t drive myself anywhere and it’s driving me crazy as I haven’t had clearance from the doctors. Then there is the whole assassin waiting to strike again. This is why I have a driver and bodyguard, armed and hyper alert. They don’t like the risk I’m taking leaving the sanctuary of my fortified villa. I don’t feel afraid, though. I sit in the back of my car and stare out of the window at the sea and drum my fingers on the leather upholstery. The coastal road dodges outcrops and gullies, and although the scenery is beautiful, I’m miles away in my head, and incapable of appreciating it.

Why did she lie to me? Her explanation makes no sense to me. If we had fucked in the hotel, why keep it a secret? It’s not as if I would have turned her away. Rather, I might have judged it as a useful test of her abilities, especially her stamina. Except I can’t remember what we did. Usually, I’m bit rough, businesslike, and aloof. Obviously, my behavior didn’t put her off. With me unable to remember our tryst she still had the guts to take the initiative and find me, and to ask to be my maid. She clearly liked my style, the lack of romance and chitchat. Yesterday, on her knees, she basically asked for more of the same, a confirmation of choice. Perhaps she thinks she can take it. Why should I refuse her?

Except, the deceit bothers me, as does the fragments of random memories I can’t piece together, like shaving her. Why did I remember that and not the sex? Has she deluded me into believing we had a good time that night? Which makes no sense, because frankly, she’s damn sexy and I like fucking her. More than like, I’m already feeling addicted to it.

It’s that itch in my palm that has sent me on this journey. There’s no way I can ask my uncle for advice. I picture the sneer, the excuse he would give: ‘Forget women, they only break hearts or betray The Family.’ I know why he speaks of betrayal. I had nothing to do with my sister’s marriage; I was just a boy back then.

I only have one other person I trust to reveal my thoughts on the matter, and I’m not sure I’m going to like what he has to say.

The car navigates a tight bend, and the scenery shifts. We’re approaching a small town that is little more than a harbor and a cluster of houses on a hillside terrace. There are no grand yachts or sailing boats, only fishing vessels and small pleasure cruisers for the odd tourist.

The house I’m visiting is one of those whitewashed buildings, its outer perimeter framed by pine trees and high hedges. It stands alone with access via a solid gate. Out of sight are CCTV fixtures and probably a dog or two lurking in the grounds. It’s a mediocre property, nothing like the mansion I inhabit.
