Chapter Eleven

This time, I was expecting the horse ride, which made it a little bit easier to handle.

But only a little.

My legs were still trembling by the time Damon dismounted. He didn’t offer me a hand. Instead, he simply caught me around the waist and lifted me down. I swayed into him when he set me on the ground and for a moment I forgot where we were.

He felt so good against me. Solid and warm. I wanted to lean into his strength, and stay there forever.

He seemed to need a moment to gather himself too, because he didn’t move away very quickly.

“So,” I began, and as I spoke, I was surprised to hear the husky undertones in my voice. “What did you want to show me?”

Instead of answering, he merely took my hand. There was a tantalizing mystery in his eyes, and I couldn’t help but be drawn towards it. We weren’t on the open plains anymore. High rocks loomed above us, and a pale, watery sun shone in the sky above.

“Come with me.” He winked at me, apparently determined to be mysterious.

I rolled my eyes but let him lead me down the narrow mountain track we were on. The air felt warmer here, probably sheltered from the harsh elements by the hills around us.

Odd patches of greenery grew in amongst the rocky terrain. It was the first true sign of nature I’d seen since arriving in the north. The sight warmed my heart.

“Damon.” I squeezed his hand, drawing his attention. “Where are we?”

“You’ll have to wait and see.”

I trotted along beside him, trying to match his long strides. Curiosity burned within me, mingling with the ache that had taken up residence in the pit of my stomach.

I need him. So much. How does he not feel the same way?

I was almost frightened at the strength of my feelings, despite knowing that they were due to the mating bond. I wondered if I’d always feel this burning pull, this desire that colored every interaction with this man and made it impossible to stay away.

It was my dragon who felt it most. But that desire, that need, had grown bigger now. It was more than just pure, naked want.

I’d never felt this way before. When his eyes met mine, my stomach swooped like I’d missed a step on a staircase.

Maybe I should’ve asked Stavrok more questions...

I dismissed the thought. There was no way I was talking to Stavrok about any of this! He’d already seen more than enough as it was.

Damon stopped in the middle of the path. He bent his head, and I shivered as his mouth brushed the edge of my ear. Did he know the effect he had on me?

“Do you trust me?” he whispered.

The words took me back to our encounter in the maze. The first words we’d properly spoken to each other. A spark of heat had passed between us then, just as it did now.

“Yes,” I breathed.

Sheer instinct spoke for me, but as soon as I said it, I realized it was true.
