Lachlan breathed hard as he reached the perimeter around the farmhouse. Ice gripped his heart as he looked at the chaos across the grounds. The wolves must have attacked as humans before the full moon, counting on the shift to turn the battle in their favor. It was clever and had meant the hunters hadn’t had a chance to attack their homestead, and the hunters had not been prepared.

The farmhouse was on fire, and Lachlan needed to find his mother. Women were considered equals and hunters to be used in the fight; she wasn’t defenseless, but Lachlan worried. As he ran towards that area, another howl called out over the skirmish. Every wolf nearby turned and ran.

Relief flooded Lachlan; the retreat had been called. Ciara and the boy must have made it to the pack and let them know. He ran to the nearest group of warriors.

“Are there wounded? Are they safe?” he called to them.

“Dunno, everything broke out so quickly. Got them on the run, though,” the brown-haired warrior grinned.

Lachlan turned away before he could grimace; he was the only one who knew the real reason behind the retreat. He strode towards his father as he saw him push through a crowd near the fields. As he approached, Lachlan could see the medics running towards the injured in that area. His stride faltered when he realized that some of the trainees were among the wounded, then saw his father crouched beside a figure on the ground and froze in horror.

Lachlan’s mother lay on the ground, covered in blood that still gushed from her neck, the contrast stark against her white shirt. Lachlan didn’t remember moving, but he was beside his mother in a heartbeat.

“Mother.” His voice was tight, and he held his hands against her wound.

His father stood, rage seeping off him, and he growled as he strode away. Lachlan held his mother’s hand to his chest, and his eyes stung. His mother struggled to speak, but only a loud gulp sounded as she lifted her other arm. Briana’s eyes softened; her hand stroked his face, then fell to the ground. The light left her eyes, and the movement of her chest stopped. Glassy eyes stared at Lachlan, and his world fell apart.

Lachlan didn’t make a sound, and he couldn’t hear anything around him. He held his mother’s hand, and silent tears slid down his face.
