Chapter Eleven

Nothing in my life could ever be simple. Not ever. Simon stirred things inside of me that scared me. He brought out every reckless instinct I tried so hard to contain. In brutal, unflinching terms he’d made me understand his greatest mistake and the price others paid for it. He expected me to judge him for it, but I couldn’t. I lived in fear of being judged for all the damage I’d caused when I was young, dumb, but still old enough to know better. Even if that weren’t true, when I looked in Simon’s eyes, I swear I could see straight through to his soul. I saw the tortured parts of him, the truths he tried to hide. He laid himself bare before me. As much as I knew I should fear him both for what he was and what he could do to me, I only wanted to fold myself in his arms and feel his warm touch. Where my brain told me the wisest course would be to take a step back, my heart and body said something else.

He's mine. I belong to him.

I knew without him telling me, the same words flowed through him when he touched me. As we sat on the couch together, I moved toward him. We sat in silence long enough for me to lose track of time. A thrumming desire coursed through me as my hand touched his thigh. Warmth spread through me, carrying a lust so deep it took my breath away. But, we kept still. I think if we’d said any more, the pull between us would have overpowered me. So, we sat hand in hand on the couch, watching the moon rise outside my apartment window.

I don’t know if Simon slept. I did. At some point during the night, I sank into his shoulder. I dreamed of falling. Time and again I startled in my sleep only to wake and find Simon’s solid chest beneath my cheek, his fingers tracing a lazy trail along my hairline. Finally, when sunlight pierced through the curtains I came fully awake in his lap.

Stretching, I sat up and shifted; turning to face him, I curled into a cross-legged position. Simon used the armrest and propped his chin on his fist as he watched me. A slow smile curved his full lips and my heart skipped a beat. I wanted this so badly. I could get used to waking up beside him.

“Did I drool on you?” I made a joke. Simon’s smile deepened and he shook his head.

“No, but did anyone ever tell you, you talk in your sleep?”

My face grew hot and I smiled. “Not lately.”

Simon’s face got serious and he gave me a quick nod. “Good.”

My living room was lighter than usual and the first tendrils of panic crept into my chest. I stood up too quickly and took an ungraceful step forward. “God. What time is it?”

Simon flipped his wrist and checked his watch. “Just after eight o’clock.”

“Shit!” I stumbled forward, heading down the hallway into the bathroom.
