Chapter Five: A Few Starter Projects

So, you have your Pi 3 and it’s all set up and ready to use. What now? Well, now it’s time to start thinking about some projects that you might want to do with it. If you have never done anything like this before or at least not with a Pi 3, then running a search for projects on the internet can throw up an endless list that can overwhelm you—and many will require you to have equipment and skills that you are not yet ready for.

That’s not a problem because I have found a few good projects for you to get started with, simple ones that will show you just how the Pi 3 works and the basic ways of using it. These projects will give you a basis that you can use to move on to intermediate projects, but for now, let’s concentrate on these fun projects that may also be quite useful and could give you the push you are looking for to purchase a few more Pi 3’s so you can make some more.

The Pi 3 developer community is innovative and inventive, and that is what keeps them going. There are always innovative ways being found to use the Pi 3 in better ways, ways that are more fun, and in ways that are ever-evolving. If you think of a project you could do with the Pi 3, there is a good chance that someone else already thought of it first.

Rather than listing reams and reams of instructions, all I am doing is giving you an overview of each project with a link to where the instructions can be found. When you go to these sites, don’t forget to have a good look around; you might find other projects that interest you, but if you’re ready to, let’s delve into these few projects first.

Turn Your Printer into a Smart Printer

With the use of a Raspberry Pi 3 and a little ingenuity, any printer can be transformed into a smart printer. It is a very simple task to install all the software needed, although it can take a bit more work to get the configuration right so that network communication is effective. The time it takes is worth it, though, because it means breathing new life into an old printer, upgrading it to bring it into modern times, instead of having to buy a new one.

You will find the instructions for this project on the Pi My Life Up website, along with loads of other projects that you can play with. The instructions are comprehensive and provide you with everything that you will need to ensure this works on your devices and networks, and the instructions can be found at Raspberry Pi Print Server: Setup a Network Printer (https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-print-server/).

All you will need are your Pi 3, an Ethernet cable or a Wi-Fi dongle, an SD card, and your power cable. And, if you are content to use SSH to control your Pi 3, you won’t even need a keyboard or a mouse.
