Chapter 6 (Alex): The situation

I looked over at Ranger, who made me a huge, giggly mess.

It didn’t even faze me that he saved my life. Just knowing that he didn’t have a girlfriend, that I had a hint of a chance, was … perfect.

But then, as I stopped giggling, I looked over at him, and smiled.

“No, seriously, you saved my life. I honestly don’t know what my uncle is capable of, but I know he wouldn’t hesitate to sell me to the highest bidder,” I explained.

He sat down, looking me in the eyes with a curious glance.

“By the way, what’s the deal with all of that? How did you end up with Ivan, and why would you even stick around with that bastard? He had power over you, and I know you didn’t like it,” he said.

I wish it were as easy as just running away. I wished I could’ve run away quicker, but then I sighed.

“It’s not as easy as you think. Ivan is my father’s brother. My father was an army general, along with a weapon’s expert, in Russia,” I explained.

“Ahh, that explains why you like weapons so much.”

“Yeah, my father was passionate about weapons. He taught me a lot about weapons and learned a lot of this even as a young child. But … he didn’t stay in the army too long,” I explained.

I noticed him look at me with surprise on his face.

“What happened, if you don’t mind me asking?”

I paused, sighing.

“He was killed in battle in Chechnya when I was just twelve years old. It was so sudden when the army brought the news to us,” I explained.

“Shit, I’m sorry,” he said.

I shook my head.

“Not much you can do. But my mother was a homemaker, and she didn’t have much of an education. My uncle, though, convinced her to take me with him to America. He promised her many things, where he would get me an education at one of the best schools and the university that America had to offer, and he promised her a better life. Of course, my mother bought it. After all, she wanted to see me succeed, and she knew that education was valued in Russia. Maybe one day she thought that I’d come back,” I explained.

“I see. I guess that … never happened?”

“No. it didn’t. He promised her that I would become a doctor, but it wasn’t true. She didn’t have much to provide me in Russia, but in America, I was abused. He brought me here but never sent me to school. Everything I learned was from manuals in the auto shop,” I explained to him.

“So you learned about cars?”

“And guns. He had contacts, and he would use me to evaluate weapons and sometimes suggest weapons for clients. I also know a lot about cars, too,” I said.

“So what happened with like going to school and such?”

“Well, when I asked him about it, he would just dismiss it. He told me I could learn everything I needed to online, and when it was time to go to university, we would discuss it,” I explained.
