Texas felt light and free as he rode down the street towards Pennyâs piece of shit house. He planned to offer her everything Penny could dream of. Texas was determined to fight for the kids, asshole didnât deserve them. Behind him rode Slate, Texas had dropped his set of store keys last night and left them at Pennyâs. He recalled they had been digging into his hip, so heâd placed them on a table.
As Texas turned the corner to Pennyâs street, his eyes narrowed on something that sent a chill through him. His gut twisted and his heart skipped a beat. Texas gunned his engine, and the bike shot forward. Behind him, Slateâs bike roared too. Pulling up on a sharp stop Texas was off his bike in seconds.
âCall 911!â Texas yelled at Slate. He sprinted forward towards the house, his worse fears realised, billowing out of the downstairs window was thick twisting black smoke. Texas ran to the front door, and with one hard strike, he kicked the door in. Smoke swept towards him like a black mist and Texas ducked low and cupping his mouth ran for the stairs.
If Penny, Carrie and the kids werenât outside, then they were upstairs trapped. Texas reached the top of the stairs. Out of the smoke, a shadow appeared in front of him, hacking and coughing. He bent low and slammed the figure over his shoulder and ran down the stairs. Texas flew through the door and slammed into Slate. Without a word, he passed Carrie off to Slate and ran back inside the burning house.
âThe kids!â Carrieâs choked scream chased after him. Carrie must have been heading towards them, Texas surmised.
Texas reached the top of the stairs coughing in the black smoke, the first door he came to was open. Blinded by smoke and beginning to hack himself, he ducked low and felt the heat through the floorboards. On his hands and knees, he groped around and finally grabbed a bed. Texas reached over and patted it down. It was empty. This had to be Carrieâs room, crawling backwards quickly, he patted his way down the hallway and found the second door.
Instantly he crawled over a toy and knew he had to be in one of the kid's rooms. Harshly gulping for breath he found the bed and patted it down, his hands landed on a small body. Greg! Texas hauled the boy up and taking a few breaths rose to his feet and raced for the stairs. He wouldnât be able to carry three of them, he had to get Greg out and return for Penny and Daisy. Flames were licking the front door as Texas burst through. Texas handed the boy to Slate and went to race back in.
âTexas, stop!â Slate yelled.
âPenny and her daughter are in there,â Texas roared back. Slate handed him a soaking wet tee, and Texas slapped him, held it to his mouth and raced back into the inferno. Behind him, flames burst into life as Texas ran up the stairs.
