Chapter 10

Anika pressed the bottom stud on her ear comm. “I’m on site.”

“Where?” Gianni’s voice caressed her ear, as if his lips were mere inches away.

Tiny goosebumps bubbled up from under her skin and ran down her bare arms. She forced a slow breath in and out to steady her nerves. “Orchid Room, north corner.”

“Stay there. I’ll come to you.”

Anika waited near a marble column in the main ballroom of the North Korean embassy. The gala to celebrate its grand opening in the nation’s capital was in full swing. She recognized a few famous faces in the couples on the gleaming dance floor and in the groups clustered around the room. The guests came from the intersecting worlds of politics, industry, news, and entertainment. They would no doubt be stunned to learn she had been sent here to steal information from the North Korean government on orders from a covert organization funded primarily by Western nations. Her mission did seem at odds with the promoted purpose of tonight’s event to celebrate a thaw in relations between North Korea and the United States and their allies. But she didn’t question what she had come here to do, or why. When she had joined U.N.I.T., she had taken a pledge to follow orders, and that’s what she would do.

She smoothed her damp palms down the sides of the inverted V-shaped, cutaway skirt with a silver unisuit underneath. The skirt’s fabric was the softest, lightest material she had ever touched. It encircled her waist like a lover’s embrace and hovered around her legs in a cloud of deep teal. She adjusted the mesh straps over her shoulders and the matching belt around her waist. She had never imagined wearing something so luxe. And even though its design was well suited for her mission, the outfit was as glamorous as any of the others on the women here. She looked like she belonged in this sophisticated crowd of politicians, executives, dignitaries, and celebrities. Her chin rose as she assumed an air of confidence.

No one must ever guess she had been raised in a federally run orphanage. But that’s my past, Anika reminded herself. She had U.N.I.T. to thank for rescuing her from that life and giving her a chance to be accepted into a new one. A chance to see the world, to be in the world—even better, to protect it. Just as soon as she completed her training and earned field agent status.

She drank in the intoxicating swirl of colors, lights, and sounds. They were a stark contrast to the agency’s black, white, and chrome interior paired with artificial lighting and imposed quiet. She felt a little tipsy, even without a glass of bubbly champagne or a candy-colored ampule, both of which were proffered by server droids in black trousers and white jackets.

An attractive man, late-twenties, caught her eye from across the room. His bronze suit highlighted dark hair and eyes. He smiled at her, revealing perfect teeth in a handsome face. She couldn’t remember the last time a well-groomed, well-dressed man had looked at her that way.
