(A full discussion of these principles is well beyond the scope of this book, but will be discussed in further writings.)
Computing Systems certainly have memory, a form of mind, and a form of decision making. The significant issues for True Intelligence and thus True Artificial Intelligence is whether there is “free” or “relatively free” will, desire, feelings and morality in any particular Computing System.
Similarly, animals have memory, mind and some level of will and decision making. But do animals have desire, feelings and morality? It would seem that a good case could be made for animals having “desire” or “lust” for such things as food, mating or being part of a group. And many pet owners will tell you that their animals have “feelings”, but how could we possibly measure such a thing? Clearly, animals have a level of intelligence, but do not formulate the ideas that we people do and thus do not communicate as we do. That is, we can’t simply ask them whether they have feelings and what they are feeling. At best, we can guess by what they do and look like or make us feel. Thus, just as with Computing Systems, animals may have the look of true desire, feelings and morality, but there is no objective proof for such notions, and much proof of the lack of such notions. (Animals are full of instinct, but not morality.)
