Later that night, I found myself in my makeshift office, thinking about Sade. I wanted to holla at her real quick to take my mind off all of the bullshit. Even though he was a traitor, I felt bad for killing that kid. It really took a lot out of me and right now, I just wanted to hear her voice.

I had already called myself with her phone the night I found it in my car, so I had her number for quite a while. Now it was time to put that muthafucka to use. Sitting down at the desk, I pushed the inventory papers out of the way to access my computer keyboard. I then typed her number into Yellow Pages’ search engine. A photography company she owned immediately popped up. It was a small business with only a few reviews, but all of them were stellar.

Elegant Rose Artistry was the name of her company, and it had only been up and running for almost 2 years now. She’d graduated from the New York Film Academy in LA, and had aspirations of owning a studio, but for now, she did freelance work.

A smart girl with a good head on her shoulders. It was nice to know she was striving for something. Nowadays, that seemed like a rare find. Most bitches I knew sold pussy for a living.

On a whim, I decided to call her to see if her line was back on. Much to my surprise, she answered on the third ring. “Hello?” Her beautiful voice filled the receiver, and in that instant, I forgot my inhibitions.

“I see you replaced the phone.”

“I see you were determined to hang onto it,” she retorted. “Seriously, it took you three whole days to contact me?”

I paused and scratched my chin. “What can I say? A nigga was tied up.”

“And so am I… Now what do you want?”

“You,” I simply said, as I smiled into the phone.

“Excuse me?!” she asked, offended.

I quickly recovered. “You ain’t let me finish. I want you to do a shoot for my son’s birthday party. It’s two weeks from today. It pays well, and I can even wire you a deposit now to secure the date.”

“How'd you know I was a—never mind, it doesn’t even matter. I can’t, ‘cuz I’m already booked up—”

“Well, free up some space then. This shit is important to me.”

“And so are my other clients who’ve also secured their dates.”

“I'll pay double whatever they’re paying on top of mine.”

“What’s with you? You always think it’s about the money. It’s not always about the money, Q—”

“Sit on it. Can you do that for me? I’ll hit you in a couple days to see if you made a decision.”

Sade sighed into the receiver, as if I were asking her to donate a kidney. “I'll think about it,” she finally agreed.

It wasn’t a flat out yes, but shit, it was good enough for me.
