Alec woke to a pounding head and rolling stomach. He hadn’t drunk so much brandy since he returned from London nearly a year ago after learning of Regina’s demise.

Except, she hadn’t died. She’d lied to him.

He pushed himself out of bed and walked to the washstand and splashed cold water on his face.

She’d lied to him.

The phrase kept repeating itself over and over in his head.

He thought that of everyone he knew, she would always be honest with him. And it hadn’t been a simple lie of no consequence. This lie had altered his life for the past year, and he still didn’t understand why.

What he needed to do was forget her. Put her in the past, on a shelf and pretend that she didn’t exist. Except, he’d see her every time he visited with Preston and Althea.

Or he could simply not go there anymore. But why should he alter his life because she had decided to come back from the dead?

Except, she hadn’t. Regina was still dead to everyone, and Pearl Pierce had replaced her.

Had the rumors and hatred that Vickery spread been so bad that Regina didn’t feel that she could visit London again? They had been just rumors. His name had never been mentioned so it was Vickery’s words against hers. Except, she’d been absent with no option of defending herself.

Still, was that really enough?

Or was Vickery really so dangerous?

There was only one person who might know, or two. One was Althea, but she wasn’t going to tell him anything, of that he was certain. He was just as certain she knew far more than she had said yesterday. There was also Lord Timothy Strotham who had lived in London until a few months ago. He had attended the Season so certainly he might know more than anyone. There had to be a reason that Regina wanted everyone to believe she was dead, including him.

Strotham! Lord Timothy’s older brother was an investigator with Bow Street, Matthias, who had been Alec’s friend, and the very Runner who had stood outside of Regina’s destroyed home and told her that she was dead.

Did he know the truth? If so, had he told Lord Timothy?

Even if the two were ignorant of that fact, Lord Timothy might still be able to provide Alec with the information that he needed as to the gossip and belief of those who had remained in London after Alec had left.

Therefore, Alec was determined to visit Lord Timothy as soon as he finished with his meeting at the textile mill.

With those thoughts, Alec made his way to breakfast but found he had little appetite and feared that if he had anything above toast that his stomach would revolt. He ate slowly and sipped the water in which his housekeeper had deposited the powder for his pounding head.

He would move on from Regina, in time. But he also knew that it would be impossible until he learned everything that had happened to her from the time of the fire until she showed up in Preston’s home.
