Chapter Thirteen

“Don’t Lose Your Head! Sources say Renee Lamar is indeed returning to the hellish Zarins Asylum for BEDLAM II: DOOR TO MADNESS, which will be odd for fans who remember her character’s gruesome and shocking end in the first movie.”

The sun had just topped the wall at the edge of Renee’s property when Max came out of the guest room the next morning. She hadn’t slept long, or very well, but she’d avoided alcohol well enough that she wasn’t hungover. When she got into bed the night before, she’d used her phone to do a quick search for Freddie McCoy just to see how famous she was. The answer seemed to be ‘quite a bit.’ She had a long list of credits stretching back to the early aughts, and for the first time, she wished she had Netflix or one of those other services that let you watch movies without paying for each one.

Google provided a trio of YouTube videos of her appearances on talk shows. She clicked on one at random and saw a column of related videos on one side of the page. One of them was titled “Freddie McCoy’s Top Sexy Moments.” She clicked on that, which turned out to be a montage of scenes: Freddie dry-humping a man in what looked to be a cellar, being frisked by a woman in leather, sitting in a hot tub, striding across a windswept roof in a ballgown that whipped around her legs like a dervish.

Her hair was almost always longer than it had been at the party, which Max found disappointing. The pompadour suited Freddie very well, and she hoped it was a new look rather than something she’d done for a role.

She ended up watching videos for almost two hours before her phone’s battery finally died. She’d slept well, with lots of amazing dreams, but now it was time for her to earn her keep.

The house wasn’t in the shambles she would have expected. She thought Hollywood celebrities would think nothing of leaving a mess, walking away and letting “the help” deal with it. But it seemed they were very careful to be tidy, or maybe just one enterprising guest had taken it upon themselves to gather as much of the empty cups and plates as possible.

It didn’t even take Max a full half hour to get everything into a trash bag, which she took out to the bin in the garage. A guitar was sitting on the divan. She assumed it was kept in the bedroom, since she’d never seen it anywhere else in the house and there wasn’t room for it in the front closet. She took the instrument by the neck and carried it down the hall. She knocked on the bedroom door, waited for a response, and let herself in.

Renee was sprawled on top of the blankets in her underwear, legs slightly spread with her feet hanging off the edge of the mattress. Her arms were curled up protectively around her head. Max almost tripped over her feet and retreated.
