Chapter Ten

Mazoku “Maz”

There was two minutes left in the game, and I was two minutes away from pounding this idiot coach into the polished wood of the basketball court. Bastard wouldn’t take his eyes off of Taki. His team was two points behind, and he was still more focused on Taki than on the damn game.

Taki, on the other hand, was entirely focused on the game. “Move your ass, Wilson!” Yes, that was her screaming instruction now. She has said little else, other than, “Defense” and “What the hell, ref?! Are you blind?!” Besides telling me to have some nachos and a beer, she had ignored my presence and continued cheering on the team. If she knew how turned on I was getting, she’d rethink her strategy.

I needed to get her to agree to come back to the house where I knew she’d be safe. The estate offered an extra layer of protection that your apartment couldn’t. Things didn’t go as planned in Tokyo. Winding down my grandfather’s more nefarious businesses was proving even more difficult than I anticipated. And ensuring that none of it spilled over into our lives here in San Francisco was proving to be an impossibility.

I had traveled to Tokyo to intercept the arms deal that my grandfather had negotiated with the leaders of several rebel groups in several African countries years before. Although I’d instructed my grandfather’s point man, one of my cousins, to advise the leaders of the termination, the weasel hadn’t done so. I had every intention of making sure the bastard could no longer make deals on my behalf. In the meantime, I’d met personally with a few of the African rebel leaders.

They were little more than savages, and all had at some point threatened me, and a few, who’d done their research on me, came prepared with threats against Taki. There wasn’t a chance in hell that I would ever let anything happen to her. I let the bastards know with painful demonstrations why threatening Taki was a very bad idea. However, there was one sadistic fuck that didn’t seem to get the message.

Several of his men were already here in the city looking for an opportunity to get at Taki. We had a few people on them but given the sheer numbers and the determination of the rebel leader, it would be better if Taki simply came home. During the day she was with me, so protecting her wasn’t a problem. I didn’t have the luxury anymore of pandering to her whims. Taki was coming home with me tonight, even if I had to tie her ass up myself.

The buzzer, signaling the end of the game, blared loudly even as the crowd was still cheering. The home team had won, and Taki joined in the team’s celebration by high-fiving the players and coaches, who, for some odd reason, had turned to her.

“Time for us to get out of here.” I spoke close to her ear so she could hear me above the celebrating crowd.
