The Pentagon Papers

Richard Nixon’s Statement

May 22, 1973

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Daniel Ellsberg was a former Marine lieutenant, Harvard-trained economist, and Rand Corporation analyst who worked on a 1967 top-secret study, commissioned by the U.S. government, on the origins of the Vietnam War since 1945. Ellsberg had earlier been in favor of the war but had become decidedly antiwar by 1969 while still at Rand. He began to secretly photocopy the report in hopes that he could ultimately make it public. In March 1971, after he left Rand, Dr. Ellsberg released the top-secret documents in his possession to the press. Those papers came to be known as the Pentagon Papers. Ellsberg was indicted with several counts of espionage, theft, and criminal conspiracy. In May 1973, after several months on trial, the District Court judge threw out the case once it was revealed that CIA operatives had burglarized the offices of Dr. Lewis Fielding, Ellsberg’s psychiatrist, with the intention of finding information that would discredit Ellsberg.
