FEAR AND LOATHING IN EVANGELISM 101

Fair to say, my social life was not benefitting from my newfound notoriety. Spoiler alert--being a bad boy at LU doesn’t get you very far. I really sought God’s help and any reprieve from the shit storm that had brewed was welcomed as God’s hand intervening to show me how much he loves me. If I got sick, God was testing me and building character. If someone died, it was because God wanted him in heaven so they could be together and play. If a child got molested and killed downtown, it was a reminder that we are broken and need God to strengthen us. God couldn’t really lose points in my mind. There was no set standard by which I could objectively blame God for failing, since he was infallible and such. The idea of him sending people to hell was such a canard to me because I would counter, “people don’t get sent to hell, they go there willingly by rejecting God.” It was good that I had such a great point of reference for God’s goodness. I just needed a reminder from time to time that Jesus is awesome. And nobody shared that message more than Mr. Danny Lovett.

I chose his class because I needed something easy, and it was required. It was called EVAN 101 (evangelism, surprise surprise!) and his book for the class was all about sharing Jesus with others. His style of evangelism was to befriend a stranger, get him or her to admit to some sin, being therefore guilty before God. A sinner in the hands of an angry God, basically. He was angry but only because of his great love! After the sinner confesses his sin, the evangelist simply needed to insert Jesus as the answer to all problems. We called problems opportunities in that class! Opportunities for Jesus to be awesome!

As an atheist it is easy to look back and see how contrived this kind of evangelism is. The logic is so simple.

Do you have problems in your life?

Those problems are because you have sin in your life.

Jesus can take away your sins and then you will go to heaven when you die and you will be able to deal with your problems here on earth with the power of his holy spirit.
