Leigh crossed her arms and listened to Dredarion’s instructions skeptically.

“It’s just a precaution,” he said. “I’ll be in his chambers for less than a minute, but the consequences if someone saw me are too high to risk. If you see anyone heading for the doors, intercept them. If it’s a noble or another servant, tell them Rab is in the middle of a liaison and asked you not to let anyone disturb him. If it’s Rab, tell him I want to see him in my study immediately. Be loud so I can hear you.”

“If it’s a noble or Prince Rab, there’s a chance they’ll ignore me and go in anyway.”

“Delay them however you can. I trust your ingenuity.”

And that was how Leigh ended up hovering in the corridor leading to Rab’s chambers, trying to look casual. She didn’t know how Dredarion was sneaking inside, and she hadn’t asked. It wasn’t through the door. Was it a secret passageway? The window? Walking through walls? She was supposed to count to two hundred, assume he’d gotten the job done (whatever the job was), and leave. Quick, clean, and simple, hopefully. Unless someone tried to enter the room, in which case it would get messy fast.

So of course Prince Rab had to stroll down the hall.

Leigh took a moment to marvel at her catastrophically bad luck and then hurried forward to cut him off. “Your Highness.” She bowed. “Your brother requests your presence in his study at once.”

She couldn’t make her voice any louder without making it obvious, and she hoped Dredarion had heard. Was he even still in the chambers, or had he finished his task already and left?

Leigh rose from the bow to find Rab surveying her. There was a distinct lack of turning around and going to his brother’s study, but at least he wasn’t pushing past her to enter his chambers.

His mouth curved slowly into a smile. “I’ve seen you around.”

Leigh didn’t reply.

“You run errands for my brother, don’t you?”

“Yes. He requests your presence in his study. At once.”

“I can’t imagine what it must be like working with him.” Rab sauntered closer. Like his brother, he had a complete lack of respect for personal space. “So dour all the time. Are his bad moods infectious?”

It took all Leigh’s willpower not to roll her eyes. Instead, she gestured blandly. “His study is this way. May I escort you there?”

“You’re quite diligent in your duties, aren’t you?” Rab’s amber gaze drifted down her body. “And very athletic too. I’d wager you have a lot of stamina.”

Oh, for crying out loud. Leigh remained silent and hoped he’d take the hint, but of course he wouldn’t. Guys like this never did.

“Care to test that stamina with me?” His smile widened to reveal his teeth, and damn. It was a wonder he didn’t walk around constantly covered in panties women threw at him, with a smile like that. “I think you’re enchanting.”

“Do you?” Leigh asked. “Or are you just coming on to me because I work for your brother and you know it’ll piss him off?”

The smile vanished, and he blinked.
