Leigh crossed her arms and listened to Dredarionâs instructions skeptically.
âItâs just a precaution,â he said. âIâll be in his chambers for less than a minute, but the consequences if someone saw me are too high to risk. If you see anyone heading for the doors, intercept them. If itâs a noble or another servant, tell them Rab is in the middle of a liaison and asked you not to let anyone disturb him. If itâs Rab, tell him I want to see him in my study immediately. Be loud so I can hear you.â
âIf itâs a noble or Prince Rab, thereâs a chance theyâll ignore me and go in anyway.â
âDelay them however you can. I trust your ingenuity.â
And that was how Leigh ended up hovering in the corridor leading to Rabâs chambers, trying to look casual. She didnât know how Dredarion was sneaking inside, and she hadnât asked. It wasnât through the door. Was it a secret passageway? The window? Walking through walls? She was supposed to count to two hundred, assume heâd gotten the job done (whatever the job was), and leave. Quick, clean, and simple, hopefully. Unless someone tried to enter the room, in which case it would get messy fast.
So of course Prince Rab had to stroll down the hall.
Leigh took a moment to marvel at her catastrophically bad luck and then hurried forward to cut him off. âYour Highness.â She bowed. âYour brother requests your presence in his study at once.â
She couldnât make her voice any louder without making it obvious, and she hoped Dredarion had heard. Was he even still in the chambers, or had he finished his task already and left?
Leigh rose from the bow to find Rab surveying her. There was a distinct lack of turning around and going to his brotherâs study, but at least he wasnât pushing past her to enter his chambers.
His mouth curved slowly into a smile. âIâve seen you around.â
Leigh didnât reply.
âYou run errands for my brother, donât you?â
âYes. He requests your presence in his study. At once.â
âI canât imagine what it must be like working with him.â Rab sauntered closer. Like his brother, he had a complete lack of respect for personal space. âSo dour all the time. Are his bad moods infectious?â
It took all Leighâs willpower not to roll her eyes. Instead, she gestured blandly. âHis study is this way. May I escort you there?â
âYouâre quite diligent in your duties, arenât you?â Rabâs amber gaze drifted down her body. âAnd very athletic too. Iâd wager you have a lot of stamina.â
Oh, for crying out loud. Leigh remained silent and hoped heâd take the hint, but of course he wouldnât. Guys like this never did.
âCare to test that stamina with me?â His smile widened to reveal his teeth, and damn. It was a wonder he didnât walk around constantly covered in panties women threw at him, with a smile like that. âI think youâre enchanting.â
âDo you?â Leigh asked. âOr are you just coming on to me because I work for your brother and you know itâll piss him off?â
The smile vanished, and he blinked.
